Martin Frk worked through a lot this season. Disappointing team performance, keeping up with the pace as an older player and a growing family. Despite “excuses” that may have caused Frk to take a step back, he rose to the occasion and led the way in goals for the Calgary Wranglers. Frk has found ways to adapt his game as new blood continues to enter the league and found great chemistry on the top line with Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins.

Expectations

Martin Frk was nearly a point per game scorer in his first year with the Wranglers in 2024-25. He finished his first season with 27 goals and 33 assists for a total of 62 points in the 67 games he played in. This was his first season back in North America after spending a year in the Swiss National League. At 32 years old, he was not expected to get NHL time this season and didn’t have a contract to do so. Frk was expected to continue to be a scorer but if others passed him by in the depth, it would not be completely shocking.

Performance

Frk ended up being reliably consistent. He finished the season with the same points total as his first season with Calgary, with 30 goals and 30 assists through 66 games. Hitting that 30 goal mark was one of his personal goals for the season. He took a few games off for the birth of his second child, but didn’t end up missing any time with any major injuries. Frk was usually placed on the right side of the top line alongside Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins. His shot continues to be his biggest asset and little if any of that record breaking 109.2 mph speed seems to have been shaved off.
Frk finished second on the team in overall points, just under Dryden Hunt and had a healthy lead in goals. Eight above the next closest, which was Rory Kerins. Kerins and Frk are quite complementary as Kerins finds Frk on a regular basis and has perfected the set up for his deadly one-timer.
Frk talked about Kerins in his exit interviews last month and said:
“He’s a really good player. But he’s a really good guy too, you know? He’s fun to be around and I know he’s so young, but he fits really in good with the older guys. You get to know your linemates. You know who you’re playing with. You know what their strengths are. For me, I know he can pass the puck so I just try to get open for him. Find the holes for him and he usually delivers and I just got to put the puck in. Like all the goals I’ve scored, I gotta always thank my teammates because without them, I would never score those goals.”
Martin Frk also joined Clark Bishop in hitting the 500 career AHL game milestone. Frk hit it earlier in the season in their Winter Wranglerfest game on Dec. 21 against the San Diego Gulls. It was especially memorable as Frk scored the opening goal of the game, which kicked in the “reverse teddy bear toss,” format where the players throw out Wranglers branded merch to the fans.
Frk still plays with a lot of confidence and swagger in his game and is perhaps the best guy on the team for goal celebrations. He was their most reliable goal scorer and being consistent in a starkly inconsistent year is something he fully recognized. Frk said:
“The season was not really good. We didn’t win too many games but I guess even if you are not winning games, I was still able to put some points up there too. So it’s good for your personal stats, but as a team, you want to win as a team right? You’re playing 72 games to get in the playoffs and then you’re battling for the championships.”

Outlook

Martin Frk’s first contract with the Flames organization was a two-way NHL deal. His extension for this season ended up just being an AHL contract. He sits as an unrestricted free agent but is very happy with the city he and his young family have called home for the last two seasons. His skating pace at this point might be behind justifying another two way contract, so if he is happy on an AHL contract, he feels like a no-brainer to keep around the Wranglers.
