The Calgary Flames sure love to draft their Russians.
In six of the last seven drafts, the Flames have selected at least one Russian player. Most of the time, it’s Russian netminders like Arseni Sergeev, Yegor Yegorov and Kirill Zarubin or defenders like Ilya Solovyov and Yan Kuznetsov.
They strayed from that path in the 2025 draft, selecting Russian forward Yan Matveiko in the seventh round. One Russian who could be available with the Vegas Golden Knights’ first round pick is Nikita Klepov.
Scouting report
Although Klepov is eligible to play for Russia’s national team whenever they return, the 6’0”, 180 lbs winger was born in Deerfield Beach, Florida, a suburb of Miami. Klepov played in Russia in his youth, but seemingly returned to the United States for the 2023-24 season. He’ll turn 18 years old on the second day of the draft.
Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis ranked Klepov as his 19th-best draft eligible prospect, having this to say about the 17-year-old.
“Teams love productive wingers, and Klepov meets every requirement. The projected first-round pick is a tremendous playmaker and maybe one of the best in the CHL. But he’s also a stout shooter and wasn’t far off from reaching the 40-point barrier. It was surprising, given he only put up 31 points in the USHL the year prior. The Michigan State University commit plays with a ton of finesse, but he’s physically strong, too. He’s just an OK skater, but Klepov should still go high because magic tends to happen when he’s in control of the puck on the attack.”
On the other hand, Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino ranked Klepov as his 15th-best prospect, one behind Ryan Lin. Here’s what was said about Klepov.
“Klepov is fantastic with the puck on his stick, especially on the power play. He’s ultra-creative and exhibits patience when making plays. He uses elite puck skills along with sneaky-quick feet to buy himself time and space while opening up lanes to release shots, or find others in better areas of the ice. Although he finished just shy of 100 points, Klepov led the entire OHL with 97 points, a rarity for a first-year player in the league.”
Additionally, Sportsnet’s Jason Bukala ranked Klepov as his 18th-best prospect back in March, having this to say about the winger.
“It will be very interesting to see which team steps up to select Klepov. I can see a scenario developing where a club in the top 12 calls his name much earlier than where I have him ranked. There’s no doubt Klepov’s elite element is his skill. He’s a play driver who craves the puck on his stick and is exceptionally dangerous ripping it from the weak side flank on the power play. His recent 10-game segment has revealed a spike in his ice time and more responsibility overall. There have been several nights where Klepov has been deployed over 25 minutes and used in all situations. He will never be described as elite defensively, but he’s a threat to score shorthanded and has contributed 36G-52A so far this year.”
The numbers
In his youth career, he played for SKA-Yunost Yekaterinburg in Russia, before coming stateside to play for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights for a season. Klepov played an additional two games with the Knights in 2024-25, but spent most of his season in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux City Musketeers.
He put up unremarkable numbers there, but that’s not surprising given he was a 16-year-old at the time. Overall, he scored 12 goals and 31 points in 59 games. Klepov finished with 20 penalty minutes and a plus-5. That post-season, he scored a goal and two points in five games.
With the NCAA allowing Canadian Hockey League players to join collegiate teams, Klepov joined the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit. If that team sounds familiar, that was the team that Flames prospect Zayne Parekh played for before joining the team this season.
At the age of 17, Klepov led the team with 37 goals and 97 points. Not only did he lead his team in points, but Klepov also led the OHL in points, rather uncommon for a 17-year-old. Among the three CHL leagues, his 97 points were tied for fifth.
Klepov’s 2026-27 season will be with Michigan State University, where he’ll be teammates with 2025 Flames first-rounder Cullen Potter.
Availability and fit
Starting with availability, scouts rank Klepov anywhere from 14th to 29th, with his consolidated ranking on Elite Prospects being 26th. Because he led the OHL in points, he’ll probably go higher than that, with most scouts ranking him somewhere in the teens.
There’s a remote chance that the Golden Knights finish with a pick around that spot. The Golden Knights finished 13th in points this season, the fifth fewest for any team that made the playoffs. As a division-winner, though, the Golden Knights will be drafting late in the first round no matter what. The earliest they could select is 24th overall, but they could select even later if they advance to the conference final or Stanley Cup Final round.
We’ll know more about where the Flames’ other pick will land as the post-season continues, but does Klepov even fit? The Flames have a whole lot of young wingers already on the team, like Connor Zary, Matt Coronato, Matvei Gridin, and Samuel Honzek. They also have a handful of young players like Aydar Suniev waiting in the wings.
Klepov is a skilled play driver with average skating and a solid compete level. He’s a good player, but it may not be what the Flames are looking for.
