The 2024 Calgary Flames draft class is starting to look like a good one.
Quite a few of the 2024 draftees were chosen out of the Ontario Hockey League, including the prospect we’ll look at in this article: Jacob Battaglia. The winger had a good breakout season and is poised to lead the Kingston Frontenacs to a post-season spot once again.
Let’s get to know the seventh-ranked prospect on FlamesNation’s 2025 summer rankings!

In our summer updates, Battaglia ranks as the seventh-best prospect, up from his ranking of 11th last summer. His highest ranking was fourth, while I ranked him as the fifth-best Flames prospect. Despite living in Eastern Ontario, I didn’t get a chance to watch Battaglia last season in person, but I watched plenty of Kingston Frontenacs games from the comfort of my own home.
Battaglia’s rookie season for the OHL’s Frontenacs was rather pedestrian, scoring just seven goals and 27 points, as the Frontenacs missed out on the post-season by just one point.
Entering his draft year, Battaglia had a breakout, as he scored 31 goals and 65 points in 67 games. The Frontenacs improved a bit, finishing seventh in the OHL’s Eastern Conference, falling in five games to the North Bay Battalion. Thanks to the strong season, the Flames picked the winger 62nd overall.
He proved that he was the right pick in 2024-25, as he scored 40 goals and 90 points in 68 games. Overall, Battaglia finished eighth in goals and 11th in points. The Frontenacs once again improved, finishing third in the OHL’s Eastern Conference with a 40-20-8 record. In 11 post-season games, Battaglia scored three goals and 16 points.
Here’s what Brock Otten from McKeen’s Hockey had to say about the 19-year-old prospect:
“Calgary’s 2024 selections out of Ontario look terrific thus far, with Battaglia being another player who took a huge step forward this past season. The big winger is such an intelligent player.Few players are as good as he is at working the wall in the OHL and he has the playmaking chops to take advantage of the extra time he creates through his protection skill. His pace of play really improved too, although his power and speed will need to continue to improve in order for him to be as dynamic at the higher levels. It’s important to note that Battaglia should not be miscast as a power forward, despite his size. Physicality isn’t likely to ever be a huge part of his game; he’s more of a high IQ, finesse player who just happens to have the size to be an asset down low and in the cycle. At this point, Battaglia’s improvement as an offensive player suggests that he could be capable of being a top six support winger for Calgary in the future.I guess, to play the devil’s advocate, you’d have to ask yourself how many high end support wingers in the NHL today aren’t competitive physical players? That’s the next step for Battaglia, to truly learn how to use his size to be a consistent difference maker and play creator (both for himself and his teammates).”
Expectations for 2025-26
Unless Battaglia takes a massive, unprecedented leap and makes the Flames’ roster out of camp (and sticks with the team), the 19-year-old will play his upcoming season in the OHL. He led the Fronts in goals and tied for the most points last season and will surely produce even more, but his entire season may not be spent with the Eastern Ontario team.
Of their top 10 scorers, only Battaglia and Tyler Hopkins will be 19 or younger when the Frontenacs play their first game. By the start of the season, six of the Fronts’ top 10 scorers will be 20, with OHL teams only being allowed to carry three overagers. Two of those 10 players have aged out as well.
While some of their younger players will have the chance to step up, the Frontenacs’ best chance for a deep run in the playoffs with Battaglia was last season. It would not be surprising to see Battaglia traded before the OHL’s trade deadline if Kingston opts to build for the future.
Either way, another step forward (say 50 goals, 110 points) would be a nice from the Flames’ seventh-best prospect.
