The New Jersey Devils have invited former Flames centre Kevin Rooney to their training camp on a professional tryout basis, the club announced Friday.
Rooney, 32, appeared in a career-high 70 games with the Flames during the 2024-25 regular season, collecting five goals and 10 points while averaging 9:25 of ice time per night.
The Canton, Massachusetts product began his professional career as a member of the Devils organization in 2016, signing his first NHL contract with the club after wrapping up his fourth and final season at Providence College.
The Flames originally signed Rooney as an unrestricted free agent in 2022. The 6’2″ forward struggled to find a niche under then-head coach Darryl Sutter, skating in just 17 games with the Flames during the 2022-23 season before being demoted to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
Rooney underwent shoulder surgery prior to the start of the 2023-24 season and was sidelined for multiple months, ultimately returning to action with the Wranglers in late January 2024. He skated in just four AHL games that year before being recalled by the Flames, with whom he remained throughout the rest of his tenure in the organization.
Before joining the Flames, Rooney spent parts of four NHL seasons in New Jersey, also serving as captain of the AHL’s Binghamton Devils in the 2018-19 season. Rooney left the Devils in 2020 to sign with the New York Rangers as a free agent; after his first year in the Big Apple, he played for Team USA at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.
Through 330 career NHL games over nine seasons with the Devils, Rangers, and Flames, Rooney has collected 32 goals and 60 points. He made his only postseason appearance with the Rangers in 2022, racking up two assists in 15 contests to help the team reach the Eastern Conference Final.
Also on Friday, the Devils officially extended training camp invites to forward Luke Glendening and goaltenders Adam Scheel and Georgi Romanov. All four players will report to Devils camp on Sept. 17.
