Russian netminder is just a synonym for the Calgary Flames.
This is Free Agent Targets, where we look at players the Flames could target when free agency opens on July 1, 2025. Last time, we looked at netminder Alex Lyon.
It’s draft season, which means that I need to fill my quota for Russian netminders.. Recently, I wrote two draft eligible netminders, Pyotr Andreyanov and Alexei Medvedev. The Flames have a type, selecting four Russian netminders in the past five drafts.
But this isn’t a draft article; this is Free Agent Targets. Would it surprise you if the Flames were considered a top contender for a Russian netminder? No? Well, they are according to the Russian sports website Sport-Express.
Let’s get to know Ivan Prosvetov.
Ivan Prosvetov’s stats
Prosvetov came to North America in 2016-17, playing in the North American Hockey League, the United States Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey League. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 draft by the Arizona Coyotes, posting a .909 save percentage and 2.88 goals against average in 27 games in the American Hockey League.
In 2020-21, the 26-year-old made his National Hockey League debut, playing three games with the Coyotes, but spending the majority of the season with their AHL team. The 2021-22 season was much of the same, as was the 2022-23 season.
In 2023-24, Prosvetov joined the Colorado Avalanche organization, playing 11 games in the NHL with an .895 save percentage and 3.16 goals against average. In the AHL, the Moscow native finished with a .921 save percentage and 2.33 goals against average in 21 games.
Shortly after the end of the 2023-24 season, Prosvetov signed a three-year deal with CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League. He played 38 games with a .920 save percentage and 2.32 goals against average, finishing the season with a 20-16-2 record. In five post-season games, Prosvetov finished with a .918 save percentage and 2.90 goals against average.
Ivan Prosvetov’s contract outlook
Unlike any other player we’ve looked at in this series, he doesn’t have an AFPAnalytics prediction for how much he’ll sign for. There aren’t a lot of examples of Russian netminders who played in North America, returned to Russia, just to return to the National Hockey League at some point.
Some examples of Russian netminders who joined NHL teams in their mid-20s are Igor Shesterkin and Ilya Sorokin, two of the top-tier netminders in the league. An example of a netminder rejuvenating his career in Russia after struggling in North America is Mikko Koskinen.
Koskinen, who is Finnish, was drafted in 2009 and struggled in his three seasons in North America. He returned to Finland for two seasons, then played five seasons in Russia, winning two Gagarin Cups with St. Petersburg SKA.
NHL teams were interested when he became a free agent before the 2018-19 season, with the netminder eventually signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers. Perhaps Prosvetov is looking for a similar deal, albeit with a little less value.
Is Ivan Prosvetov a fit for the Flames?
The million-dollar question is whether or not Prosvetov is a fit for the Flames. In terms of cap hit, that shouldn’t be a problem. However, his playing time is a bit more of a concern.
Dustin Wolf was so darn good that he expedited the Flames’ rebuild to a point where they are contending for a post-season berth. It doesn’t seem likely that the Flames will use a 1A/1B system next season, like they did with Wolf and Daniel Vladař in 2024-25.
If that’s what Prosvetov is looking for, there are better teams *cough*, Edmonton, that fit his needs better. If the 26-year-old is okay to back up, he could be a cheap and potentially high-reward signing for the Flames.
Plus, he’s a Russian goalie, so yes please.
