It’s the end of the calendar year, friends, and across sports media, we’re taking stock of the first portion of the 2024-25 NHL season. One of the teams that has drawn a lot of praise throughout NHL circles is the Calgary Flames.
Thought by many to perhaps be a cellar-dweller in 2024-25, the Flames have hung around the playoff pack so far this season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman appeared on The Fan Hockey Show across the Sportsnet radio network on Tuesday and agreed with the notion that the Flames are the biggest surprise team of the season.
He got into what he likes about the Flames a bit, as well:
The thing I like about Calgary is number one it’s not as noisy around their team as it was last year. I think that’s, there’s a lot of noise around the Canucks obviously, and it’s not as noisy around the Flames, and I think that’s a real credit to the organization and the players. And number two, there have been times this year I thought Calgary may fall off the cliff, and they don’t do it. They find a way to stay in it. You know, I think that’s also a credit to them.
You see Wolf, he’s for real, there’s a player there. I think Zary, there’s a player there. Coronato, there’s a player there. Pelletier, there’s a player there. I don’t know what all the ceilings are going to be, but I’m starting to see, you know… Pachal, there’s a guy who’s carved out a role. They’ve found some guys this year and are giving opportunities to guys this year that look like they’re going to be players.
The real interesting guy to me is Andersson. At the beginning of the year, first of all, they’ve asked all their veterans to just play, and they’ve all played. Huberdeau has played better. Andersson has been incredible. Their other guys have all shown up to play. That’s the guy that’s most interesting to me. The overall vision of where they’re going, if Andersson buys into that, that’s a big victory for them. Big victory.
Rasmus Andersson’s current contract expires after the 2025-26 season, at which point he’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent. Friedman elaborated on what makes Andersson potentially such a big piece to retain.
You’re not any less dedicated to Kadri or Coleman, they’re on your roster, but Andersson is a guy you drafted, you developed, and now he’s turning into exactly what you had hoped he would be. And those are the guys you really want to convince: if they buy in, it really sends a great message about your team.
The Flames are currently one point behind the Vancouver Canucks for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. They will close out the 2024 portion of their schedule, appropriately enough, with a clash with the Canucks at the Saddledome.
