The Calgary Flames have a whole bunch of picks in the late second round and early third round.
As it stands, they have the 51st, 55th, 65th, and 68th overall picks. If they keep all of them, it stands to reason that the team will look to take a flier or two. Players picked at this part of the draft don’t tend to become superstars, but there are some notable depth players selected in the 50-70 range.
One player who could become that valuable depth player is right-shot defenceman Giorgos Pantelas. Let’s take a look at his scouting report, his numbers, and his fit on the Flames if they do end up drafting the 18-year-old.

What do scouts think of Giorgos Pantelas?

Pantelas is a right-shot defenceman who stands at 6’2”, 210 lbs. Born in Laval, Québec, the 18-year-old was raised in British Columbia, playing in the Kelowna area during his youth. He was drafted 19th overall by the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings in 2023, spending two full seasons with the Manitoba-based team.
Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis ranked Pantelas as his 51st-best draft prospect, ironically the same pick that the Flames currently possess. Here’s what he had to say about the defenceman.
“Pantelas was one of the WHL’s most electric defenders earlier in the season but ultimately quieted down with just two assists in his final 15 games between the regular season and the playoffs. At one point, a 50-point pace looked possible, but he only finished with 37. Still, there’s enough to like as a second-round pick.
I like how Pantelas never stops moving, has incredible confidence with the puck and sacrifices his body for a play. Pantelas is the type of player who won’t let you down defensively and will continue to improve offensively. He’s a project, by all accounts, but one worth taking a chance on.”
The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler is a little tougher on the 18-year-old from Laval, ranking the defenceman as his 67th-best draft eligible prospect. Here’s what Wheeler has to say about Pantelas.
“He’s a pro-sized D who skates well, defends hard, has an active and disruptive stick and does a decent job gapping up and angling opposing players. His puck play is definitely vanilla, but he’ll get shots through.
There was some late first/early second chatter in the fall, but he belonged lower than that at the time and certainly does now. He projects as a potential depth defenseman but he has some imperfections he needs to work through. His results in Brandon have been quite strong but I thought about excluding him from this top 64, and would have if there were more players I liked in this class.”

How did Giorgos Pantelas produce in 2025-26?

Pantelas played a game with the Wheat Kings in 2023-24, but didn’t become a regular until 2024-25. Over 61 games with the Western Hockey League team, the right-shot defenceman scored four goals and 10 points in 61 games, with two additional assists in five post-season games. While he didn’t factor into the scoresheet often, the then 16-year-old finished as a +11.
He joined the Wheat Kings for the 2025-26 season as well, with his numbers jumping across the board. In his aged-17 season, Pantelas scored six goals, a small jump, but added 31 assists in 68 games, bringing his point total to 37. The right-shot defenceman also doubled his penalty minutes (25 to 50), while finishing the season as a +19. That said, he was held pointless in four playoff games.
His point pace slowed considerably toward the end of the season. After notching a goal and three assists in a victory over Max Curran and the Edmonton Oil Kings on February 21st, Pantelas notched just a goal and two assists over his final 11 games.
While Pantelas’ numbers weren’t terrific, he had solid production as a 17-year-old on a team that wasn’t seen as a contender. His 37 points on defence were tied for 29th-most for defencemen in the WHL.

Could Giorgos Pantelas be a fit with the Calgary Flames?

Pantelas will almost certainly be available for the Flames at some point. He ranks anywhere from 38th to 80th, having a consolidated ranking of 56th according to Elite Prospects. That works out well for the Flames, as they currently have the 51st, 55th, 65th, and 68th overall picks.
But the big question is whether he’s a fit or not. The Flames have a glut of right-shot defencemen in the prospect pool. Their best prospect in the system is Zayne Parekh, whom the Flames picked ninth overall two years ago. It’s possible that they select another right-shot defenceman with their sixth overall pick, as Keaton Verhoeff and  Chase Reid could be available.
Other notable right-shot defencemen in the prospect pool are Henry Mews, They also have Hunter Brzustewicz, who played 34 games with the team last season. This is to say right-shot defencemen are a strength of the Flames.
At the end of the day, his fit is dependent on what he brings to the table. He’s a project who is a steady defenceman, but doesn’t excel in one area. His best attribute is his puck-moving ability, but he’s also solid defensively, a good building block for a third-pairing defenceman.
With the number of picks the Flames have in the late second and early third rounds, it may prove to be worth taking a flier on Pantelas.
