The Calgary Flames made some roster moves on Tuesday, cutting 11 players from their training camp roster.
They’re carrying 27 players as of Wednesday morning. So which 23 players are going to be on the opening night roster?
Here’s our best, educated guesses with two pre-season games left to go.

Goaltenders

Lock: Dustin Wolf
Trending towards NHL: Ivan Prosvetov
Trending towards AHL: Devin Cooley
Wolf is the incumbent and got Vezina Trophy votes last season. He’s on the team.
Prosvetov and Cooley have both played two full games. They’re slated to split Wednesday’s game in Calgary against Vancouver. So far, Prosvetov has been a bigger positive difference-maker than Cooley. Barring anything unforeseen happening, it feels like Cooley is the odd man out.

Defencemen

Locks: Kevin Bahl, MacKenzie Weegar, Joel Hanley, Rasmus Andersson, Brayden Pachal, Zayne Parekh
Trending towards NHL: Jake Bean
Trending towards AHL: Daniil Miromanov, Ilya Solovyov
From the last time we’ve done this, we’ve upgraded Parekh to a lock. He’s done everything asked of him in training camp and he’s looked impressive in the pre-season games. He’s been practising on the power play all camp. He’s on the team.
Assuming they’re carrying seven defenders, that leaves one spot. We’re leaning strongly towards Bean, who’s an experienced leftie and has probably been the best of the cluster of himself, Miromanov and Solovyov. He suspect he begins the season as the seventh defender, as he’s been a bit more consistent than Solovyov thus far. (Four of their six “lock” blueliners are righties, which all-but rules Miromanov out.)

Forwards

Locks: Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, Matt Coronato, Connor Zary, Morgan Frost, Martin Pospisil, Joel Farabee, Mikael Backlund, Blake Coleman, Yegor Sharangovich, Ryan Lomberg, Adam Klapka
Toss-up: Rory Kerins, Matvei Gridin, Justin Kirkland
We’ve upgraded Klapka to a lock since our prior check-in.
And after those 12 locks, we have a trio battling for two spots. Kerins has been frankly superb in camp and given that he can play centre or the wing, he provides some versatility. Gridin has such a high ceiling in terms of his potential as an offensive player and he’s performed very well, too. Kirkland is a feel-good story, but hasn’t been quite as sharp as Kerins or Gridin. If we were forced to choose, we think Kirkland is the odd man out.
If you ask us, the Flames are trending towards having a pair of teenagers – Zayne Parekh and Matvei Gridin – on their roster to start the season for the first time since 1980-81. If you’re thinking that the Flames’ revitalization is going to be driven by their youngsters, that’s probably a positive sign.
Which players do you want to have on the Flames roster to start the season? Let us know in the comments!
