After a full day of games on Saturday, Sunday was a quieter affair with only four match-ups on the schedule—and just one Calgary Flames player lacing up his skates.

🇸🇮 Slovenia vs 🇦🇹 Austria

Slovenia is still searching for its first win of the tournament, and today’s game against Austria may have been its best chance to break into the win column before seeing France tomorrow.
On a first-period power play, Slovenia got off to a promising start. A slapshot from the point by Blaz Gregorc beat the Austrian goalie, giving Slovenia a 1-0 lead—just their second lead of the tournament so far. Unfortunately for Slovenia, that advantage didn’t last long as Austria tied it just minutes later.
After a scoreless second period, Austria took the lead midway through the third on a slick redirection. But this time, Austria couldn’t hang onto the lead either. Slovenia struck back shortly after to tie the game and force overtime.
Overtime solved nothing, sending the game to a shootout—the second of the tournament, both involving Austria. That prior experience appeared to pay off, as Austrian shooters went 3-for-3 to earn their second shootout win, 3-2, and third overall victory. Slovenia, still winless, now has a single point in the standings.

🇺🇸 United States vs 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan

This game between the U.S. and Kazakhstan got off to a slow start. Both offences struggled to generate much in the opening frame, which ended scoreless.
Something must have been said in the American dressing room during intermission, because they came out firing in the second. Frank Nazar finally broke through to make it 1-0, and the U.S. went on a run, scoring three more goals in a span of just 3:12. A late tally from Michael Kesselring extended the lead to 5-0 after two.
Zach Werenski added a sixth in the third before Victor Volkov got Kazakhstan on the board with just 50 seconds remaining, spoiling Jeremy Swayman’s shutout bid. The U.S. held on to win 6-1.
The U.S. now sits tied atop the Group B standings with Czechia, who have a game in hand. With Switzerland right behind them, it’s shaping up to be a tight finish.

🇨🇭 Switzerland vs 🇭🇺 Hungary

Switzerland has looked strong at this year’s Worlds, and they weren’t about to let Hungary disrupt their momentum. This one was, plain and simple, a blowout.
In the first period, 41-year-old and 24-year Swiss league veteran Andres Ambühl opened the scoring. New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier also chipped in with his first of two goals, making it 2-0 heading into the second.
Switzerland added three more in the middle frame, but it was the third period where things truly got out of hand. Ambühl completed his hat trick, and Switzerland scored five in the final 20 minutes to seal a 10-0 victory.
Technically, it was another shutout for Leonardo Genoni—but it didn’t require much from him, as Hungary managed just six shots all game. Not a great day for the Hungarians.

🇸🇰 Slovakia vs 🇱🇻 Latvia

Both Slovakia and Latvia were coming off losses and looking to bounce back.
The opening period was tight but largely controlled by Slovakia. Both teams exchanged goals and entered the second tied 1-1.
That’s when Latvia took over. They scored three in the second period—two of them coming off Slovak defensive breakdowns.
Latvia added one more in the third to make it 5-1, and that’s how it ended.
Flames prospect Sam Honzek wasn’t much of a factor in this one. He was used sparingly, logging just 7:24 of ice time—the second-lowest on the team. With Slovakia tied for the fewest goals in the tournament (7), you’d think giving more ice to a player who’s contributed to a few of them might be worthwhile. For now, though, Honzek remains mostly on the bench.
