The Calgary Flames welcomed the Los Angeles Kings to town on Tuesday night. The Flames were on a three game heater, the Kings on a three game losing streak. Both streaks ended in a game that was pretty emblematic of each team’s strengths: low-scoring and tight-checking.
In a game that required extra time, the Flames beat the Kings by a 3-2 score after a shootout.
The rundown
The Kings opened the scoring 2:35 into the first period. Joel Armia made a nifty pass that got past Hunter Brzustewicz, sending Quinton Byfield in all alone against Dustin Wolf. He tucked a backhander past Wolf to put the Kings up 1-0.
First period shots were 8-6 Kings.
The Flames tied things up 14:50 into the second period. The third line executed a really nice cycle passing play, ending with Victor Olofsson finding Olli Maatta down in the slot area. Maatta’s off-speed shot got inside the near post before Darcy Kuemper could get across, tying the game at 1-1.

Second period shots were 9-6 Kings.
17 seconds into the third period, the Kings retook the lead. Byfield collected a pass from Trevor Moore in the neutral zone and then turned on the jets. Byfield fired a puck stick-side past Wolf to give the Kings a 2-1 lead.

But later in the period, the Kings took a pair of minors, giving the Flames a five-on-three advantage. Zayne Parekh finished a passing sequence by wristing the puck past Kuemper to tie the game at 2-2.

Third period shots were 10-7 Flames.
Olofsson and Morgan Frost both had superb scoring chances in overtime, but the Kings managed to hold on to leave overtime tied.
This game required the skills competition to declare a winner of the extra point: Artemi Panarin scored an all-timer for the Kings, waiting out Wolf and then chucking the puck over top of the sprawled out netminder. Morgan Frost beat Kuemper glove-side with a nice shot, but the shootout deciding goal was by Yegor Sharangovich, who seemed to lose his handle of the puck… and it drifted through Kuemper’s legs and into the net to give the Flames the victory.

Why the Flames won
The Flames just kept doing what they’ve done over the last little while: they played their game. There was nothing overly fancy about their outing. They made a couple nice offensive plays and scored a big special teams goal in the third period. That was enough to earn them a point. In extra time, they generated enough good looks in overtime and the shootout to earn the extra point.
Red Warrior
Zayne Parekh had one of his better games as a pro int his one. Yeah, he had a power play goal, but he also had five shots and did a lot with the ice time he was afforded.
Turning point
Let’s go with Yegor Sharangovich’s very weird shootout winner.
This and that
Dustin Wolf started in net, continuing the Flames’ goalie rotation. Ryan Lomberg rotated in on the fourth line, with rookie Tyson Gross rotating out.
This was the Kings’ league-leading 28th extra-time game. It was the Flames’ 14th such game, putting them in a tie for second-lowest in the NHL this season.
