Calgary Flames defence prospect Jeremie Poirier scored an impressive goal in a Memorial Cup game on Saturday afternoon.

With his Saint John Sea Dogs on the power play, Poirier picked up the puck at the point and unleashed a wicked shot past Shawinigan Cataractes goaltender Antoine Coulombe.

Poirier’s first goal of the tournament gave Saint John a critical 4–3 lead with 5:48 to play in the second period.

Poirier’s goal was the fourth of five consecutive tallies for the Sea Dogs. After Shawinigan shot out to an early 3–0 lead, Saint John forward William Dufour scored a natural hat trick to open the middle frame before Poirier netted the go-ahead goal.

Dufour subsequently added another goal less than two minutes into the third period to make it 5–3 Saint John, which remains the score with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation time.

Saint John and Shawinigan are playing to determine which team will earn a bye to Wednesday’s championship game. The losing team will face the Hamilton Bulldogs in the semifinal on Monday.

Poirier, 20, scored 16 goals and 57 points in 67 games with the Sea Dogs during the 2021–22 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League regular season. In March, he passed current Ottawa Senators mainstay Thomas Chabot as the Saint John franchise leader in scoring by a defenceman.

The Flames originally selected Poirier in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft. The 6′ left-handed defenceman signed an entry-level contract with Calgary on Sept. 24, 2021.
