The National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety has laid the hammer down on a pair of Calgary Flames following Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Wild.

Flames captain Mark Giordano has been suspended for two games for his kneeing incident with Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu. The basis for the suspension is that Giordano’s attempted (failed) close-off on Koivu along the boards resulted in a knee-on-knee collision and an injury to Koivu.

Giordano will be unavailable for the Flames’ games on Saturday (against Nashville) and Sunday (against Edmonton) as a result of his suspension.

Flames winger Ryan Lomberg has been suspended one additional game for his fight with Minnesota’s Matt Dumba for engaging in an altercation immediately after a legal line change. This is in addition to the one-game suspension he automatically earned for his instigator penalty in the last five minutes of regulation.

The basis for the additional game is that Lomberg jumped on the ice and made a bee-line to fight Dumba, not even attempting to go after Ryan Suter (who had the puck).

Lomberg will be unavailable for the Flames’ games on Saturday (against Nashville) and Sunday (against Edmonton) as a result of his suspension.

Both Giordano and Lomberg will count against the Flames’ 23-man roster and their salary cap while suspended.
