Friends, the Calgary Flames have locked in their opening roster for the 2025-26 National Hockey League season.
The Flames began Monday with 24 active players and got down to the 23 player in-season maximum by placing forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Martin Pospisil on the injury reserve list, retroactive to their respective injuries on Wednesday against Vancouver. (Both are eligible to be activated seven days after their original injuries, which would be as early as Thursday when the Flames visit the Vancouver Canucks.)
The Flames have also called up forward Sam Honzek from the Wranglers to fill out the 23-man roster and, presumably, serve as the 13th forward for the time being.
That the Flames will begin the season with two teenagers (Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh) on their active roster for the first time since 1997-98, when Steve Begin and Derek Morris broke camp on the NHL roster.
Here are the 23 active players – two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 13 forwards – that begin the season with the big club:
- Goaltenders Devin Cooley and Dustin Wolf
- Defencemen Rasmus Andersson (alternate captain), Kevin Bahl, Jake Bean, Joel Hanley, Daniil Miromanov, Brayden Pachal, Zayne Parekh and MacKenzie Weegar (alternate captain)
- Forwards Mikael Backlund (captain), Blake Coleman (alternate captain), Matt Coronato, Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost, Matvei Gridin, Sam Honzek, Nazem Kadri (alternate captain), Justin Kirkland, Adam Klapka, Ryan Lomberg, Yegor Sharangovich and Connor Zary
As noted, Huberdeau (an alternate captain) and Pospisil begin on the injury reserve list. Roster spots would need to be opened for either of them to return to the active roster.
For you jersey fanatics, note that the Flames’ two freshman have been given new numbers ahead of the start of the season.
Parekh will wear #19, the same number he wore in the Ontario Hockey League with the Saginaw Spirit. He’s the first Flames player to wear #19 since the departure of Matthew Tkachuk during the 2022 off-season. Other notables to wear #19 with the Flames include Tim Hunter, Oleg Saprykin, Chuck Kobasew and Team Canada hero Paul Henderson.
Gridin has been assigned #92, the same number he wore in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League with the Shawinigan Cataractes and in the United States Hockey League in his second season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. He’s the second Flame to ever don the number, following Michael Nylander. Gridin has mentioned in interviews that he’s a big fan of Evgeny Kuznetsov, so that’s likely where the number connection comes from.
The Flames begin the 2025-26 regular season on Wednesday night in Edmonton against the Oilers.
