Day two of the National Tournament regional round was on Friday.
Three Calgary Flame prospects were in action on three different teams. Luke Misa and Penn State played Minnesota Duluth, while Eric Jamieson and Denver took on Jonathan Castagna. Unfortunately, at least one prospect was going home.
Let’s take a look at what happened on Friday and set up what’s next.

Penn State vs Minnesota Duluth

In Albany, the match-up between Penn State and Minnesota Duluth was a low-scoring affair. Eight and a half minutes into the game, Penn State’s Shea Van Olm opened the scoring. With about five minutes left in the first period, Max Plante scored to tie it at one.
That’s the way the game stood after the first, second, and most of the period. It wasn’t until Hunter Anderson scored an even strength goal with a little over five minutes left in the game to break the deadlock.
Minnesota Duluth held on for the remainder of the game, scoring an empty-netter with a second left on the clock to officially end Penn State’s season, and potentially Gavin McKenna’s collegiate career.
As for Misa, he finished his freshman season scoring eight goals and 19 points in 37 games. There’s a good chance we see him with the Nittany Lions in 2026-27.

Denver vs Cornell

The other game involving Flames prospects was not nearly as close. Six minutes into the first period, Jake Fisher scored for Denver, with that goal ending up being the game winner. Denver scored an insurance goal with four and a half minutes left in the first, with Flames prospect Eric Jamieson picking up the assist.
Sam Harrias made it a 3-0 game with four and a half minutes left in the second period, and just over five minutes into the third period, Clarke Caswell’s goal gave Denver a 4-0 lead. The game was all but over at that point for Cornell, but they still pulled their goal in the final five minutes, with Rieger Lorenz sealing the victory.
Although the score was lopsided, the shot total was far closer, with Cornell registering 24 shots to Denver’s 30. Jonathan Castagna had three of those shots and finished as a -2. He very likely finished his final college season with 15 goals and 34 points in 33 games.

Other brackets and setting up Saturday’s games

Henry Mews’ Michigan defeated Bently 5-1, which set up a matchup against Minnesota Duluth on Sunday at 3:30 PM MT. The reigning National Tournament winners, Western Michigan, defeated Minnesota State 3-1 to move to the regional finals.
As for the four regional matchup finals, at least one Flame prospect will head to the Frozen Four. Ethan Wyttenbach’s Quinnipiac takes on North Dakota, which features Cade Littler, Cole Reschny, and Abram Wiebe. That game is on Saturday at 5:00 PM MT. With Denver’s victory, that sets up a NCHC match-up against Western Michigan, with that game taking place on Sunday at 1:00 PM MT.
As for the other two games, Michigan takes on Minnesota Duluth on Sunday at 3:30 PM MT, while Michigan State takes on Wisconsin on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MT.
