It was today in 2000 that the Calgary Flames acquired Mike Vernon for his second stint in the city.

Vernon, then 37, was acquired from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for the rights to center Dan Cavanaugh and Calgary’s 8th round pick 2001.

And let’s just say his second stint was far different from his first. Drafted in the third round of the 1981 draft, the Calgary native joined the club full-time in 1985-86 and stuck around until a 1994 trade that sent him to Detroit.

Those first nine years in the organization saw him play 468 games winning 248 while posting a .882 save percentage. With it game eight trips to the playoffs and a Stanley Cup ring in 1989.

His second stint came after he spent time in Detroit, San Jose, and Florida, and the Flames brought him back to finish out his career. He played in 59 games between 2000 and 2002 winning only 14 of them stopping 88.7 per cent of the shots he faced.

For Vernon, however, it was a victory lap on an otherwise successful career and in 2002, he announced his retirement from the NHL.
