Sidney Crosby’s Hall of Fame career just keeps getting better.
The 38-year-old looks poised to have another strong season, scoring four goals and eight points through his first seven games. In the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, Crosby registered his 1,695th regular season point thanks to a goal. With that goal, Crosby has taken over the regular season + postseason all-time point record for the Penguins.
His former teammate, Mario Lemieux, held the record as the Hall of Famer scored 1,723 regular season points and 172 post-season points. It’s almost a certainty that Crosby will break Lemieux’s regular season point record in franchise history later this season.
Chris Tanev leaves game with an injury
On Tuesday, former Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Tanev left the Toronto Maple Leafs’ game against the New Jersey Devils early in the second period.
The injury came on an innocuous collision off a face-off early in the second period, with Tanev holding his head area. He was able to skate off the ice, but he didn’t return for the remaining 38 minutes.
Tanev, 35, spent parts of four seasons with the Flames until he was traded ahead of the 2024 trade deadline. During the 2024 off-season, he signed a six-year deal with the Maple Leafs.
Whalers vs Nordiques return… sort of
On Tuesday, the Colorado Avalanche unveiled a throwback Québec Nordiques jersey, which will be worn seven times this season. One of those seven times will be on Tuesday, as they host the Carolina Hurricanes. The Avalanche won’t be the only team wearing throwback jerseys in that game, as the Hurricanes will wear their Hartford Whalers jerseys.
Both the Nordiques and Whalers originally played in the World Hockey Association before joining the National Hockey League in the late 1970s. The Nordiques departed Québec City in 1995, moving to Denver. In just their first season, the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup.
Two years later, the Whalers moved from New England to Raleigh, North Carolina. The Hurricanes haven’t found the same success the Avalanche have since joining the league, but they defeated the Edmonton Oilers in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. enters Game 7 wearing Matthews’ jersey
Speaking of jerseys, Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entered Monday’s Game 7 wearing an Auston Matthews jersey.
With a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Blue Jays’ designated hitter George Springer, the Blue Jays earned their first World Series appearance in over 32 years. It also goes to show that the supposed Toronto curse only extends to the Maple Leafs, as the Toronto Raptors won the Larry O’Brien Championship in 2019.
Game 1 of the World Series begins on Friday, and if you want more Blue Jays’ content, check out Blue Jays Nation or this article by Adrian Kiss earlier this month.
