Sidney Crosby is one of the best players of our generation.
At the age of 38 years old, the Cole Harbour native continues to be one of the most productive players in National Hockey League history. On Sunday evening, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain had a two-point night in their 4-3 shootout victory over the Montréal Canadiens.
Those two points were important, as Crosby tied then moved into sole possession of first in points in the Penguins organization, surpassing Mario Lemieux’s 1,723 points. It’s been a terrific career for Crosby, who now has 645 goals and 1,724 points in 1,387 games in his career, including 20 goals and 37 points in 35 games this season.
It’s hard to think what could’ve been if he wasn’t injured in his prime, as he could’ve well been the second player to notch 2,000 points in league history. The same, obviously, can be said for Mario Lemieux, who missed three seasons due to cancer, playing just 915 games in his career.
Crosby’s next Penguins’ milestone is surpassing Lemieux’s 690 goals, which could happen at some point next season. He also moved into eighth in most points in NHL history, with his sights set on Steve Yzerman’s 1,755 points.
Blue Jackets acquire Mason Marchment
Before Friday’s roster freeze, the Columbus Blue Jackets traded a 2026 fourth-round pick and their 2027 second-round pick to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for Mason Marchment.
Marchment, from Uxbridge, Ontario, went undrafted and spent most of his early professional career in the American Hockey League. He got his big break with the Panthers in 2020-21, scoring two goals and 10 points in 33 games that season. In 2021-22, he scored 18 goals and 47 points in 54 games.
He turned that into a four-year deal with the Dallas Stars during the 2022 off-season, spending three seasons with the Central Division team. Overall, he scored 56 goals and 131 points in 211 games, reaching the Western Conference in all three seasons with the organization. During the summer, he was traded to the Kraken.
In 29 games with the Kraken, Marchment scored four goals and 13 points in 29 games where he was a -4. However, he scored a goal in his Blue Jackets debut.
Stars’ Tyler Seguin underwent ACL surgery
Marchment’s former teammate, Tyler Seguin, underwent ACL surgery recently after tearing the ligament on Dec. 2. He’ll be reevaluated after the Olympic break in February.
ACL injuries are never easy to come back from, and Seguin will be out for the remainder of the regular season, with his post-season fate yet to be determined. Through 27 games this season, Seguin had seven goals and 17 points in 27 games.
He also missed a large chunk of the 2024-25 season, scoring nine goals and 21 points in 20 games as he battled injury. Seguin returned for the Stars’ post-season push, scoring four goals and eight points in 18 games.
The Brampton, Ontario native hasn’t played more than 30 games since 2023-24, and hasn’t played 80 or more games since the 2021-22 season.
