The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their rare Laval Rocket series on Monday night after falling 5-3 on Saturday. This game was the only action in the league on Monday and the Wranglers looked to continue to build off some of the positives they’ve seen in their last stretch of games. They started off hot with a three goal performance in the first period, including Zayne Parekh’s first AHL goal.
The Rocket had a bounce back in the second but the Wranglers put their distance in scoring back and picked up a 6-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens affiliate.
Lineup notes
Ivan Prosvetov made his first start in nearly two months. He suffered a lower body injury in the Wranglers’ game against the Abbotsford Canucks on Dec. 2 and has been nursing the injury ever since. He was able to get back to skating in the last couple of weeks and backed up Arsenii Sergeev in the last game. The only other lineup change was on the blue line where Etienne Morin came out and Jeremie Poirier came in.
Wranglers lines
Dryden Hunt – Sam Morton – Martin Frk
William Stromgren – Rory Kerins – Aydar Suniev
Carter King – Clark Bishop – Carter Wilkie
Lucas Ciona – David Silye – Alex Gallant
Artem Grushnikov – Daniil Miromanov
Nick Cicek – Zayne Parekh
Turner Ottenbreit – Jeremie Poirier

Game at a glance
The Wranglers swapped netminders this game to bring Ivan Prosvetov back to game action. On the other end of the ice, the Rocket stayed with Jacob Fowler in net. The Wranglers had the first shot of the game then the Rocket came back with a few looks that Prosvetov was ready for. At 3:23, the Wranglers got on the board first with a goal that Nick Cicek walked into. Cicek’s marker was set up by Martin Frk and Dryden Hunt.
32 seconds later, Cicek’s D partner, Zayne Parekh, netted his first AHL goal off a redirected shot he took from the point. His goal was also assisted by Hunt and Frk and gave Calgary an early buffer on the scoreboard.

A few minutes later, the first penalty of the game was whistled when Will Dineen was called for slashing. This came at 7:54. The Wranglers power play didn’t generate much on this chance but managed to find another goal later in the period. Turner Ottenbreit and Dryden Hunt made room for Martin Frk to take a monster slap shot and beat Fowler point blank at 16:44. Frk finished off his goal celebration with a wave over to his family in the stands.
Hard to stop Martin Frk when the shot comes off the stick that hard. 3-0 Wranglers
After this goal, Laval started to show a little bit of frustration. An awkward hit involving Carter Wilkie behind the Rocket’s net got shaken off by the Laval player and William Stromgren ended up exchanging some words from the bench with Luke Tuch. The Wranglers didn’t take their foot of the gas and continued to push for more.
At 19:43, Laval was called for slashing and the Wranglers ended up giving up a shorthanded rush the other way but Prosvetov was able to cover it up. At the end of the first period, the Wranglers led 3-0 with one of their best starts of the season and outshot the Rocket 14-10. Calgary started the second period with 1:43 of power play time remaining. Sam Morton got a look during this power play before it expired. At 3:41, Zayne Parekh scored his second goal of the game of a sharp angle shot in deep. This goal was unassisted.
Zayne Parekh scores again! Crazy angle on this shot. Parekh makes it 4-0 Wranglers
12 seconds after Parekh’s goal, Daniil Miromanov was called for slashing and the Rocket tried to take some momentum the other way. They peppered Prosvetov with a few shots and closed the gap between the shot differentials. At 7:41, the Rocket were called for slashing and this gave Calgary some offensive zone time back. They couldn’t keep the puck contained and ended up giving the Rocket a bit more space than they probably would’ve liked in the offensive zone. Zayne Parekh had the block of the game off a shorthanded chance in front of the net.
Great anticipation and block from Zayne Parekh here on the shorthanded chance. (He's okay)
Laval continued to drive the activity in the second half of the period and was awarded for it at 14:43. Jared Davidson scored the first goal of the game for the Rocket off a backhand move he stuck five hole on Prosvetov. At 16:14, Jeremie Poirier was called for cross-checking and Alex Gallant was called for roughing. This started a domino effect that really hurt the Wranglers in this frame.
Turner Ottenbreit was without a stick for the first bit of the penalty kill, then Clark Bishop lent his over to cover. Then at 16:47, Adam Engstrom scored on the five on three bar down. Ottenbreit gave a shove to his opponent’s ribs in the goal celebration and was called for cross-checking. Calgary went back to the five on three and Sean Farrell scored another bar down goal five seconds into the Laval power play. Calgary used their timeout right after this goal as the Rocket had worked their way back within one goal of them.
The Wranglers killed off their remaining penalty and Nick Cicek ended up drawing a slashing call at 17:44. This Wranglers power play turned into a goal for the home team when Rory Kerins went for a shot from the point that Dryden Hunt deflected in. This goal came at 19:15, was also assisted by Sam Morton and put Dryden Hunt up to four points in the game.
Rory Kerins goes for the shot and Dryden Hunt finishes it off with the deflection. A well timed goal for Calgary to start to get some control back in the game
That wrapped up the action in the middle frame and the Wranglers went into the second intermission ahead 5-3. Shots in the second period were 17-7 for Laval. The start of the third was played with quite a bit of intensity and neither team giving up much room in their respective zones. Halfway through the period, only two shots were put up on each side.
At 16:35, the Rocket pulled Jacob Fowler for the extra attacker and at 18:53, Martin Frk scored on the empty net, earning his fourth point of the night and Dryden Hunt assisted on it for his fifth point of the night. Hunt’s five points earn him a professional career high and set a team record for points in a single game.
The Rocket put their netminder back out for the remainder of the game and the Wranglers won 6-3 to snap their six game losing streak. All three stars went to Wranglers, with Martin Frk picking up the third, Zayne Parekh picking up the second and Dryden Hunt picking up the first. Shots finished 36-26 for Laval.

Flames conditioning watch
Zayne Parekh
Zayne Parekh continues to progress in this time in the AHL, with every game showing another level to his game. Game one was about getting his timing back, game two got him involved in some scoring with two assists and this game, game three, brought him scoring with two goals. His second goal was one that should be highlighted on major sports networks for at least the next few weeks. It started with a jolt of momentum from his defensive partner, Nick Cicek opening the scoring, then him getting his first in the league shortly after then the standout goal early in the second period. Even he admitted he didn’t think he’d score from there and didn’t have anywhere else to put the puck and got lucky. Luck may have contributed but this game overall felt like Zayne Parekh at an elite level.
After the game, head coach Brett Sutter said:
“I think the message was to him, I told him on the bench, now you’ve shown you can make those high-end plays. The plays where you’re scoring goals and setting guys up. But now show that you can manage the game too.”
Parekh finished with two goals, two shots and a +2 rating in this game. This match-up was Zayne’s last eligible home game of his conditioning assignment. He is expected to join the Wranglers for their road trip this weekend, but will only be able to play on Friday as his two weeks expire by their Saturday game.
