The Calgary Wranglers were looking to bounce back against the San Jose Barracuda after a narrow loss on Thursday. A late goal from Martin Frk put them within one but they still fell 4-3. In this game, they quickly got behind after a three goal opening period for the Barracuda and couldn’t crawl back. Calgary fell 4-1 and were swept in their San Jose series.

Lineup notes

Prior to the game, the Flames announced they called up Daniil Miromanov after Zayne Parekh suffered an injury against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night that has him in a week to week status. Slotting in for him was Simon Mack, who was recalled from Rapid City earlier this week.
Alex Gallant also returned after his three game suspension and Parker Bell returned to the lineup. Coming out in their places were Andrew Basha and Carter King. The coaching staff also made some tweaks to the lines with Rory Kerins centring the second line and Sam Morton getting the promotion to the top line. The top two defensive pairings also got a different look together as Nick Cicek and Hunter Brzustewicz have played most of the season together so far.

Game at a glance

Ivan Prosvetov got another chance against the Barracuda after having a tough showing on Thursday. A shaky second period ended his night and Owen Say finished things up between the pipes. Prosvetov was looking unlike himself in those scenarios so a fresh start should bode well for this netminder. For the Barracuda, they swapped things up with Gabriel Carriere getting the nod.
Alex Gallant made his return known quickly with a fight in one of his first shifts against Anthony Vincent at 2:40.
After Gallant and Vincent finished serving their penalties, the Barracuda got on the board with a shot from Egor Afanasyev from the top of the faceoff circle. This goal came exactly eight minutes into the period.
At 10:32, the first penalty of the game was called against Clark Bishop for hooking. Then right after this call, Rory Kerins took an interference call and the Barracuda added to their lead off a one timer from Kasper Halttunen at 15:03.
At 15:44 Halttunen took another shot from the top of the circle and beat Prosvetov once again. Calgary managed to get one more shot on net before the end of the period from Turner Ottenbreit that forced Carriere to make a glove save. At the end of the first, the Wranglers trailed 3-0 and shots were 11-5 for the visitors.
Ivan Prosvetov was back out to start the second period. The Wranglers had a run of shots in an early shift, then things felt like they were tilting back towards the visitors. It was a pretty flat period until 16:06, when Shane Bowers was called for interference.
The Wranglers got a bit of energy from this and got set up in the offensive zone. Aydar Suniev was looking for a lane and found Lucas Ciona on the doorstep. Ciona scored his first of the season at 17:43, with Sam Morton also picking up an assist on this marker.
In the last minute of this frame, Nick Cicek and Jimmy Huntington dropped the gloves for a late period tilt.
By the end of the second period, the Wranglers trailed the Barracuda 3-1 and were behind 27-16 in shots. The horn malfunctioned at the end of the second and froze the clock so the third was a little delayed to get going.
Cicek and Huntington served the rest of their penalties and Calgary looked to try and get something going. With a defender in the box, the pairings switched up, then the lines mixed up to the usual skaters in the third.
Clark Bishop was trying to get some emotions going with a hit along the Barracuda bench that led to a dogpile behind San Jose’s net at the end of the next play. Both he and Parker Bell were right in the middle of it.
After this, the Wranglers got a power play chance at 7:06 when Anthony Vincent was called for high sticking. This got Calgary going and was about the best stretch of play they had in this game. At 17:05, they pulled Ivan Prosvetov and about a minute and a half later, a clearing attempt made its way into the empty net. The goal scorer was Colin White.
Prosvetov went back out after this goal and about 30 seconds later, Alex Gallant got tied up with another Barracuda skater that ended his night with a continuing altercation misconduct and a cross checking call Martin Frk served for him.
The last minute expired and the Wranglers fell 4-1. Shots finished 31-27 favouring the visitors.
Lucas Ciona said post game:
“There’s ups and downs throughout the season, especially at the start, and we lost a little bit of our structure and our mojo a little bit. We just got to get that confidence back in our game and we’ll be set to go.”

Scoring stat summary

Lucas Ciona – 1G
Aydar Suniev – 1A
Sam Morton – 1A
