Recap: Wranglers drop third straight against Silver Knights on Sunday

The Calgary Wranglers have had a rough go at it this week against the Henderson Silver Knights. They hosted them for two games earlier in the week and dropped the first 5-4 in overtime and the second 5-2 in regulation. Their series continued into Sunday but the location switched up with the Wranglers heading to Henderson, NV to complete their last of three games against each other this week. They fell for a season high third straight loss due to some timely scoring against them in the third. The final score was 2-1.

Game at a glance

Dustin Wolf was back between the pipes after a few days off from games. Jiri Patera was in the net on the other end of the ice for Henderson. The first period had a great start for Calgary. They were getting most of the zone time in the opening minutes and got four shots and a goal off before Henderson could even register a shot on Wolf.
The opening goal came 3:17 into the game from a tip-in from Mitch McLain. Clark Bishop and Yan Kuznetsov assisted on McLain’s 15th goal of the season. 
That was the only scoring action through the first period and the Wranglers went into the second up 1-0 and just trailing in shots 9-7. The second period was not super eventful scoring wise and the score remained the same going into the second intermission. Henderson out-shot Calgary 13-11 in the second frame.
Early in the third, the Silver Knights evened things up 3:50 into the period when they rushed the zone and snuck the puck past Wolf. Exactly six minutes later, the Silver Knights struck again in a controversial play that maybe should have been reviewed a little bit longer. 
Here’s a look at the reviewed goal that the officials decided would stand despite it appearing to be redirected above the crossbar.
This play would be a huge turning point in this game and eventually lead the Silver Knights to a 2-1 victory. The Wranglers got five more shots off between this goal and the end of regulation but it wasn’t enough to answer back. Their two period lead over the Silver Knights was not enough to win this game. Shots finished up 32-31 favouring Calgary.
This loss was the Wranglers’ first time this season that they fell in three straight and the first time this season that Dustin Wolf fell in two games in a row. It’ll be a series they’ll like to keep in the rearview mirror and move on. 

Next up 

The Wranglers are done with the Silver Knights now until the end of March, but their road trip will continue. Their next game will be on Wednesday against the Coachella Valley Firebirds then they will head over to Loveland, Colorado for the weekend to face the Eagles. Wednesday’s game is set to start at 8:00 p.m. MT.
