The Calgary Wranglers played their fourth game of the season on Sunday and finally secured their first victory of the season. The previous competition between them and the Tucson Roadrunners resulted in a heartbreaking 5-4 overtime loss after a three goal comeback. The back half of the series also needed overtime to decide it but this one managed to go in Calgary’s way.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers coaching staff switched a couple of things around again for this game. Coming out of the lineup were Parker Bell, Lucas Ciona, and Simon Mack. In their places, David Silye, Andrew Basha, and Turner Ottenbreit came in. Because of the back to back again, they also opted to start Owen Say in net with Ivan Prosvetov backing him up.

Game at a glance

Both teams swapped their netminders for this game after their Saturday night game went long in overtime. For the Wranglers, Owen Say got his second start of the season and Jaxson Stauber was in net for the Tucson Roadrunners.
Scoring didn’t start very early for these teams but Calgary came out looking to get ahead early. They had the first chance on the power play at 5:08 when Miko Matikka was called for interference. Calgary managed to put up a couple of shots, but nothing to get past Stauber.
To get some energy going, Montana Onyebuchi and Alex Gallant had one heck of a tilt. They last fought on January 15th of this year, and that was a memorable one as well. This rematch was likely premeditated, as these guys were probably talking about it as early as warmups. There is a mutual respect there, as even when they ended the fight, they tapped each other’s helmets with smiles on their faces.
Calgary continued to push for that first goal and had a couple more chances on power plays later in the period but at the end of 20 minutes, these teams were scoreless and the Wranglers had a 13-6 edge in shots.
Calgary was looking like the better team in the second, but that confidence was challenged by a one-timer from Miko Matikka at 5:26. Matvei Gridin let them have the lead for a whole 12 seconds before he scored his second in as many games at 5:38. Tucson wasn’t going to leave him open like that again after that goal. Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins picked up the assists.
The Wranglers reset and earned their first lead of the night by 12:19 when Jeremie Poirier was on a two on one and toe dragged around one of his defenders and beat Stauber to make it a 2-1 game. William Stromgren and Martin Frk picked up the helpers on Poirier’s first of the season.
23 seconds later, Andrew Basha also scored his first goal of the season by skating through five guys during a shift change and just leaving them absolutely stunned. Hunter Brzustewicz picked up the lone assist on this marker.
Brzustewicz was called for hooking shortly after this goal, but it didn’t do any damage to Calgary’s lead. Despite their big production push, the Wranglers were actually outshot 13-6 in the second. They definitely capitalized on their opportunities, scoring three on six shots.
In the third period, the Wranglers were working on protecting their lead but their opponents weren’t going down easily. They started a comeback, similarly to how Calgary did the night previous with none other than a ghost of the Flames’ organization’s past, Kevin Rooney leading the charge. Rooney made the Wranglers pay for a turnover and scored at 8:27.
The Roadrunners comeback completed itself at 16:04 when Autin Poganski scored the equalizer off a rebound. There was only one shot recorded on goal for the rest of regulation and these teams needed overtime for the second night in a row. Shots in the third were an even 9-9.
In overtime, the Wranglers managed to not even give the Roadrunners a chance at another overtime victory and on just the second shot of the extra frame, Nick Cicek scored the game-winner off a one-timer fed by Dryden Hunt. Matvei Gridin picked up his second point of the night with the secondary assist.
The Wranglers won 4-3 in overtime and shots finished 30-28 Calgary. As the team shared on social media, many celebratory pucks were handed out after this game with Dryden Hunt picking up his 250th AHL point, Owen Say earning his first professional win, Andrew Basha scoring his first professional goal and Rory Kerins hitting 100 AHL points.
