It was a big night on the road for the Calgary Wranglers as Matvei Gridin made his immediate impression in the AHL, Rory Kerins beat the All-Time Wranglers scoring record and a three goal comeback just barely fell short in overtime.
With a huge push in the third, the Wranglers earned a chance in the extra frame but fell 5-4 to the Roadrunners.

Lineup changes

Matvei Gridin was assigned to the Wranglers on Friday to make room for Jonathan Huberdeau’s return to the Flames lineup. Gridin travelled with the team and made his Wranglers debut in this game. The rest of the lineup was closer to the season opener with Parker Bell and Artem Grushnikov slotting back in and Ivan Prosvetov getting the start. Andrew Basha, David Silye and Etienne Morin slotted out of the lineup for this game.

William Stromgren – Sam Morton – Lucas Ciona
Alex Gallant – Carter King – Parker Bell
Nick Cicek – Hunter Brzustewicz

Game at a glance

Ivan Prosvetov got the nod for this first game against his former team and on the other end of the ice, Matthew Villalta was between the pipes. All it took for Matvei Gridin to score in this league was one shift, one shot and 37 seconds. He came into the offensive zone with the puck on his stick, took a shot that went wide, then circled back for the wraparound goal. Clark Bishop and Nick Cicek picked up the assists.
The Roadrunners worked hard early for that answer back goal and were rewarded at 10:44.  A play that brought Prosvetov down in the crease turned into most of the Wranglers skaters on the ice scrambling to keep the puck out and Cameron Hebig of the Roadrunners managed to jam it in for their first goal of the night.
A few minutes later, the Roadrunners took their first lead of the game when Noel Nordh went in on Prosvetov and when the Wranglers’ netminder tried to play the puck, he bobbled it and Nordh slipped it past him to make it a 2-1 game. This second goal came at 14:31.
At 16:04, the first penalties of the game were dealt with offsetting minors going to Austin Poganski for holding and William Stromgren for cross-checking. Just 19 seconds after these calls, Daniil But skated into the zone with ease and did a forehand backhand move to get the third puck past Prosvetov.
The last couple of minutes of the frame wound down without any other scoring, and the Roadrunners held a 3-1 lead after 20 complete minutes. Shots were 14-7 Tucson in the first.
In the second, the hits were getting harder and the conversations after the whistle continued to lengthen. Lucas Ciona, William Stromgren and Alex Gallant seemed to be involved the most and Gallant went to try and get a fight going but his partner did not accept. At 2:42, Gallant was called for roughing.
On this penalty kill, the Roadrunners had a couple of chances, one that rang off the post and out and another that was sitting in the crease behind Prosvetov that he covered up in the matter of time. They managed to successfully kill off this penalty and earn a power play of their own a few minutes later.
The next goal came past the midway mark of the period when Ivan Prosvetov squeezed his pads to make the save but not quite hard enough and the puck scooted between and the Roadrunners extended their lead to 4-1. Max Szuber was the goal scorer for this marker at 10:52.
The back half of the period was less action-filled filled and in the last minute of the frame, Michal Kunc was called for holding. This penalty would carry over into the third period. At the end of the second, the Wranglers were down 4-1, but shots in the second were closer with Tucson outshooting Calgary 11-8.
Early in the third, the Wranglers took advantage of their power play opportunity and put up a flurry of shots on Villalta before Dryden Hunt corralled the puck and set up Hunter Brzustewicz for a great shot through traffic to put the Wranglers within two.
Calgary pushed for their next one and got another power play chance at 6:27 when Scott Perunovich was called for hooking. On this power play, Rory Kerins scored a beautiful bar down goal that broke the team scoring record previously held by Ben Jones. Hunter Brzustewicz also picked up another point on this marker with the assist.
They kept the momentum going through their next power play at 8:32 but weren’t able to even things up on that opportunity. Between 11:21-11:30, both Alex Gallant and Dryden Hunt took penalties and the team managed to come up big on this penalty kill to avoid a momentum shift in the home team’s direction.
Calgary activated their power play once again at 15:14 when Max Szuber was called for delay of game. Martin Frk was shooting rockets at Villalta but kept getting turned away. Finally, in the last 38 seconds of the game, Rory Kerins managed to score the equalizer to give the Wranglers a chance in overtime.
At the end of regulation, Calgary had pulled ahead in overall shots and put up 18 to Tucson’s five in the third period. For the extra frame, Dryden Hunt, Rory Kerins and Hunter Brzustewicz were out for the first shift. Just 26 seconds in, Hunt was called for high-sticking.
In that penalty kill, Clark Bishop had a diving play and a block to stop the Roadrunners and clear the zone and Prosvetov put up a huge save tight to the post to keep them alive.
Unfortunately, at 4:09, Austin Poganski scored the game winner for the Roadrunners and the Wranglers were left with one out of a possible two points in this game. Shots finished an even 34-34.
