The Calgary Wranglers played their fourth and final game of the week with a match-up against the Ontario Reign on Sunday evening to open up their series. Both were up to four games on the week by this point so the expectations were not completely unrealistic going in. Calgary opted to stick with the same lineup they had on Saturday night and had the same result as their previous night with an overtime win.
This time, the score was 5-4.
Game at a glance
The Wranglers kept their normal rotation in net and went with Waltteri Ignatjew starting for this game. On the other end, Erik Portillo got the nod for the Reign. The Wranglers had the better of the early opportunities in this game as they were on the power play before the first minute of play had even passed.
Reilly Walsh was called for tripping at 48 seconds and by the 2:22 mark, Jeremie Poirier put the puck in the back of the net. Dryden Hunt picked up the assist on this opening goal.
At the three minute mark, Lucas Ciona and Franceso Pinelli exchanged some words at center ice and dropped the gloves for a fight. Just 13 seconds after these two tousled, Jarred Tinordi and Jacob Doty dropped the gloves. These back to back fights both got five minute majors and ignited energy on both sides of the ice.
Calgary was the team that benefitted the most from this early action and scored another goal at the 3:44 mark from Dryden Hunt. On just the second shot of the night, Hunt scored on a one-timer the opposing goalie did not even see. It was practically an empty net for him to aim at. William Stromgren got the lone helper on this goal.
2️⃣ shots = 2️⃣ goals
The first five minutes of the period really set the tone but the action did start to draw out after the second Wranglers goal. Later in the period, Artem Grushnikov put up a hit on an opposing skater at center ice and in the scrum that happened after this, Clark Bishop and Jack Studnicka were called for roughing at 13:24. With Grushnikov also picking up an interference call, the Reign were on a power play that was cut short by another call against them.
The score from the opening two goals remained the same by the end of the period and the Wranglers led the Reign 2-0 after 20 minutes of play. Shots through the first period were just 6-5 for Calgary. In the second period, Ontario had a quick pushback to cut Calgary’s lead in half. Andre Lee scored the opening goal for the home team just 90 seconds into the frame off a tip-in through traffic.
The Wranglers didn’t wait long to answer back when Sam Morton scored his 10th goal of the season at 6:56 when he came up on a two on one and took the top corner shot himself. Jeremie Poirier picked up the lone assist on this goal.

On this play, Samuel Fagemo was called for an abuse of officials 10 minute misconduct and an unsportsmanlike conduct minor that Martin Chromiak served for him. Just under a minute later, William Stromgren made it a 4-1 game with a power play marker set up by Martin Frk and Dryden Hunt.

The Wranglers took the foot off the gas a bit after this goal and did end up giving up another tally later in the period. Dryden Hunt was first called for slashing at 13:33 then Yan Kuznetsov was called for delay of game at 14:14. The Reign capitalized on this five-on-three chance just at the trail end of it with a goal from Glenn Gawdin over the shoulder of Iganatjew.
Before the end of the second, Ontario got one more past Waltteri Ignatjew with a goal on the doorstep from Taylor Ward at 17:18. The Reign exploded in shots in the middle frame outshooting their visiting opponents 17-8. However, the score after two complete periods still favoured the Wranglers as they were up 4-3.
In the third period, Calgary held on to their one goal lead for nearly three quarters of the period but gave up a goal at 14:28 from Jack Studnicka. The Wranglers were unable to get another shot off through the rest of regulation but thankfully, their netminder stopped everything he saw.
The game went to overtime and looked as if it might go to a shootout. 4:08 into overtime, the same trio of Ilya Solovyov, Martin Frk and Clark Bishop, who were the difference makers in overtime on Saturday, also found success on Sunday with a game-winning goal from Solovyov off the post and in to put this game away.
SOLO DECIDES THE GAME!!
This goal earned Solovyov the first star of the night and Dryden Hunt was given the third star for his three point effort in this one. The score finished 5-4 for Calgary and they were outshot 36-20.
