Change is in the air in Calgary, it appears. Per multiple reports, the Calgary Flames are moving on from head coach Darryl Sutter. This comes just two weeks after it was announced that incumbent general manager Brad Treliving was departing the organization.
(Update: Sutter’s departure has been announced by the club.)
Sources tell @DailyFaceoff the #Flames are moving on from coach Darryl Sutter. Sutter's two-year contract extension was set to kick in on July 1.
Hearing that Darryl Sutter has been let go as Flames head coach.
The 64-year-old Sutter was two months away from his two-year contract extension kicking in, which was set to pay him a reported $4.3 million per season through 2024-25. However, interim general manager (and president of hockey operations) Don Maloney noted at his introductory press conference that “everything” was being reviewed, when asked about Sutter’s future with the club.
Two weeks later, that review has concluded and resulted in Sutter’s departure. Sutter leaves the organization as the Flames’ all-time coaching leader in games and wins.
Sutter rejoined the Flames as head coach midway through the 2020-21 season, replacing Geoff Ward. After some mixed results that season, competing in the North Division, the Flames went off in 2021-22 and had their best season since 2018-19 and winning the Pacific Division for the second time in recent memory. He was voted the Jack Adams Award winner. But the Flames’ results went in the opposite direction in 2022-23 and it appears that contributed to Sutter’s departure.
