Friends, the Calgary Flames made a lot of significant trades over the past year. Since Craig Conroy arrived he’s moved out seven regular NHL pieces.
But until recently, the return for those trades was primarily in the abstract due to the many picks (and pick conditions!) involved. Now we have more names to substitute into Conroy’s trades, so let’s revisit them and see how things have shaken out so far!
Tyler Toffoli
The day before the 2023 NHL Draft, the Flames sent Toffoli (with a year remaining on his deal) to New Jersey in exchange for then-pending restricted free agent Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round pick.
The Flames signed Sharangovich to a two-year contract with a $3.1 million AAV – he scored 31 goals and 59 points in his first season and signed a five-year extension with a $5.8 million AAV on July 1 (2024). The Flames selected BCHL standout Aydar Suniev with their third-round pick, and he posted 12 goals and 25 points in his freshman year at the University of Massachusetts.
Nikita Zadorov
At the end of November, the Flames sent Nikita Zadorov (in the final year of his deal) to Vancouver for a 2024 fifth-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick.
The Flames subsequently traded the 2024 fifth-round pick to San Jose in exchange for Nikita Okhotiuk at the trade deadline. Okhotiuk has reportedly signed the CSKA Moskva in KHL, though the deal has yet to be announced – CSKA is facing some IIHF transfer sanctions for how the whole Ivan Fedotov situation was handled, and their lack of announcement could be related to them trying to navigate those sanctions. The Flames tendered Okhotiuk a qualifying offer, so they retain his NHL rights until he’s 27.

(The 2026 third-round pick is still pending.)
Elias Lindholm
During the All-Star Break, the Flames sent Elias Lindholm (in the final year of his deal) to Vancouver for Andrei Kuzmenko, the rights to prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick.
Brzustewicz and Jurmo were both signed to entry-level deals. The first-round pick was used to select Matvei Gridin. The condition on the fourth-round pick wasn’t converted, and the pick itself was traded to Philadelphia during the 2024 NHL Draft in exchange for fifth and sixth-round picks in that draft. The fifth-round pick was used to select Luke Misa, while the sixth-round pick was used to select Eric Jamieson.
In effect, the Flames traded the final two and a half months of Lindholm’s contract for six assets. And the return could get heftier depending what happens as the Flames enter the final season of Kuzmenko’s contract.
Chris Tanev
In a three-way deal also involving the Devils at the end of February, the Flames traded Chris Tanev (in the final year of his deal, 50% salary retained) to Dallas in exchange for Andrei Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round pick and a conditional 2026 pick.
The second-round pick was used to select Jacob Battaglia. The condition on the additional 2026 pick wasn’t converted so the Flames didn’t receive the pick.
Noah Hanifin
In a three-way deal also involving the Flyers prior to the trade deadline, the Flames traded Noah Hanifin (in the final year of his deal, 50% salary retained) to Vegas in exchange for Daniil Miromanov (in the final year of his deal), a conditional 2024 third-round pick and a conditional 2025 first-round pick.
The Flames signed Miromanov to a two-year extension with a $1.25 million AAV. The condition on the third-round pick wasn’t converted (so it remained a third-round pick) while the condition on the first-round pick did convert, and it was bumped back to 2026. The Flames used the 2024 third-round pick to select Kirill Zarubin.
(The 2026 first-round pick is still pending.)
More recent trades
The Flames made two trades during this off-season which added picks to the 2025 NHL Draft:
- Jacob Markstrom (with two years left on his deal, 31.5% salary retained) was traded to New Jersey for Kevin Bahl and a conditional 2025 first-round pick.
- Andrew Mangiapane (with a year left on his deal) was traded to Washington for a 2025 second-round pick.
