Scotia Place: a street-level look at construction progress from very late May 2026

Folks, we got a bit of an official update on Scotia Place construction progress from City Hall on Tuesday morning.
Since the dissolution of the Event Centre Committee, updates on the project are being funnelled through the Infrastructure and Planning Committee. On Tuesday, the committee received an update from the project team and it was short and sweet: they’re currently on time and on budget.
They’re aiming to have the building water-tight by the end of the year. (“Water-tight” means you have walls, a roof and building envelope fully installed, enclosing the building to protect it from the elements.) Stick-taps to the City of Calgary for the cool snapshot from inside the rink structure itself, which is from the very end of April.
Once again, we did the rounds of Stampede Park late in May to see how things looked at the new rink. Here’s how things looked on the final Saturday of May 2026, before Calgary was deluged with several days of rain.

Here’s the update:

And here’s two weeks prior…

The exterior panelling – the white and brown stuff – is being laid on the green building envelope and it’s working its way around the building. There’s also a new metal structure on the exterior patio structure. We’re thinking it’s meant to be helping them install some exterior structures on the gap in the building structure just above it. (The building’s plans call for an open-air patio, so we’re thinking it’s a temporary structure.)
Here’s how it’s supposed to look from the renders:

Two weeks ago:

The green building envelope is working its way around the corner – yay – and we’re seeing a bit more internal structure work done – there are walls we can see on the lower right side that weren’t there two weeks back.
The bigger news: hey look, there’s more roof structure! See the white equipment boxes from two weeks back? The roof structure was about there in mid-May, and now it’s fairly well past that point. We would estimate about a third of the roof spans have been installed so far.
Here’s what this view is expected to look like from the renders:

Roof progress from the north
Here’s a slightly different angle, looking more straight north-south than at the northwest corner, with a bit of a cleaner look at just how much roof has been installed already.

Northeast corner
The new look:

And two weeks ago:

In the background, you’ll notice that the structural steel has continued to move around the building – they’re just about the whole way around – and much of the decking has been added, too. In the foreground, you’ll notice a bit of form work is beginning to be set up, presumably to start work on the structure of the multi-level parkade .
Southeast corner
The new look:

And two weeks ago:

This is the view that’s arguably changed the most since mid-May. The structural steel for the main arena bowl is almost the entire way across – there’s a gap in the steel that we’re thinking is there on purpose and will be closed once most of the roof structure has been installed and the big crane is ready for removal.
And off to the right of this frame, you’ll notice the structure for the ESSO Community Rink entrance is starting to go up, too. There’s still a big hole out front – the community rink itself is inside that hole – that needs to have a roof placed on it so they can work on the public plaza, but a lot of progress has been made on this corner.

We’ll see how things look later on as we progress further into June.
