Thankfully, Rasmus Andersson isn’t going anywhere.
On Wednesday morning, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli joined Sportsnet 650 and when he was asked about what he knows about the situation with Andersson and the Calgary Flames. Seravalli’s answer was blunt, saying he’s not going anywhere.
Seravalii also stated that the team is happy with the players they have because they want to play for the Flames, something that was a problem during the 2023-24 season some believe.
Of course, many teams are interested in Andersson. For example, the Vancouver Canucks reportedly want a puck-moving defenceman, something that Andersson is proficient at. The cost for the Flames’ right-shot defenceman would be expensive to say the least, but there’s a working relationship between the Canucks and the Flames, as the two teams linked up for two trades last season.
The other Canadian team in the Pacific Division could use him as well, as the Edmonton Oilers are clearly missing a top 4 defenceman on the right side. Sure, they could’ve had Philip Broberg but instead will need to trade for defenceman at the trade deadline.
Moreover, the Utah Hockey Club’s back-end has been banged up, specifically on the right side of their defence. Sean Durzi and John Morino will both be out month-to-month, leading to calling up Maveric Lamoureux and trading for Olli Määttä.
The cost for Andersson would be immense. The 28-year-old is off to a fantastic start, leading the Flames with 10 points, as well as the team lead in goals with four. Although the Flames are on a three-game losing streak, they’re off to a 5-3-1 start. What’s more is that Andersson is on a great contract, making $4.55 million annually until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Things may change in the future, especially if the Flames continue to struggle. But it seems at least for now and maybe for the indefinite future, Rasmus Andersson will remain a Flame.
