Notes and expectations

On Tuesday, the Flames announced they had called up left shot defenceman Yan Kuznetsov. Up until this point, Kuznetsov played in all 10 of the Wranglers’ games, putting up two assists. This is a good news story for a young defender who has put his time in but only got one game at the NHL so far. That changed on Wednesday, when he slotted in against the Columbus Blue Jackets and picked up his first NHL point with an assist on his former Wranglers teammate’s goal, Adam Klapka.
Kuznetsov’s call up is going to give more opportunities to the extra left shot defencemen such as Artem Grushnikov, Etienne Morin and Turner Ottenbreit. Ottenbreit has likely earned the start after his two point game against the Bakersfield Condors on November 2nd. Someone who may benefit the most out of this chance is Etienne Morin, who has only played in two games so far and a few confidence games would bode well for the rookie.
As far as the forwards go, Alex Gallant remains unavailable for the first game of this series to serve the last game of his suspension. Carter King and Andrew Basha put up points in the games last weekend and are adding to the depth scoring. The regular contributors so far have been as expected, including Rory Kerins, Matvei Gridin, Sam Morton, Dryden Hunt and Hunter Brzustewicz as the top five scorers. Oddly enough, William Stromgren is still looking for his first goal of the year and is playing with a lot of confidence on the top line. He’s been more of a set up guy and that has been working really well for him with nearly an assist a game.
Some of the guys up front outside of Stromgren looking for their first markers of the season include David Silye, Lucas Ciona, Alex Gallant and Parker Bell. There’ll be a few players itching to score in this series against a team that does not have a lot of massive individual contributors or many goals for so far this season. The Barracuda are down at seventh in the division and this stretch has put Calgary in third in the division.
This series starts on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. MT puck drop then after a day off between games, they’ll be right back at it for a 1:00 p.m. MT game on Saturday. You can catch these games in person at the Scotiabank Saddledome or stream them for a fee on Flo Hockey. Multiple FlamesNation contributors will also have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
