The Calgary Wranglers made some roster moves official on Friday, announcing four signings of players to American Hockey League deals for the 2024-25 season.
The previously-reported signings of forwards Deni Goure and Connor Mylymok were confirmed by the club, as well as the re-signing of goaltender Connor Murphy and the addition of blueliner Charles Martin.
We’ve already discussed Goure and Mylymok around here, back when the deals were reported on social media by Inside AHL Hockey’s Tony Androckitis. Goure is a 21-year-old right shot forward who had 96 points with the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack last season as an overager. Mylymok is a 24-year-old left shot forward who finished up at Niagara University last season and played 11 games with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads.
We’ll be honest, we thought that Murphy was already under contract for the 2024-25 season, as his original signing back in July 2022 was reported by a few places – notably in an interview on the website of the NCDC, the league where he played before college – but either way, he’s back. He spent last season on an AHL deal, and split the year between the Wranglers and the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush. Murphy was quite good in spurts last season with the Wranglers, and the 25-year-old seems like the fifth pro goalie on the Flames’ depth chart between Dustin Wolf, Dan Vladar, Devin Cooley and Waltteri Ignatjew. If nothing else, Murphy’s an excellent minor-league insurance policy.
Finally, Martin is a 26-year-old right shot defenceman. He’s headed into his second pro season, and he attended Wranglers camp last season and spent the campaign with Rapid City. He put up pretty solid numbers with the Rush offensively, and you never know, his game could keep growing as he gets more accustomed to the rigours of the pro game.
The four signings give the Wranglers seven players under AHL deals for the 2024-25 season: forwards Alex Gallant, David Silye, Trevor Janicke, Goure and Mylymok, blueliner Martin, and goaltender Murphy. The Flames have 43 players on NHL deals for the coming season – three of them (Matvei Gridin, Etienne Morin and Zayne Parekh) likely on sliding deals – plus five restricted free agents.
Given the number of players to juggle across the organization, there’s a pretty decent chance that a few Wranglers players spend time with Rapid City this season.
