The Flames have four conditional draft picks to navigate in 2027 and 2028

Friends, back when he was general manager of the Calgary Flames, Brad Treliving showed a fondness for adding conditions to draft picks basically whenever he made trades. In 51 trades made during his time with the Flames, Treliving made 14 trades involving conditional picks.
Heck, in our internal trade tracker spreadsheet, the inter-connected conditions involved in the Sean Monahan and Matthew Tkachuk trades were described as “wildly complex.” So when Craig Conroy succeeded Treliving as GM in 2023, it’s likely many onlookers were hoping for fewer conditional picks. (It’s me. I’m the “onlooker.”)
Well, three years, Conroy has made a few trades with conditional picks, and the Flames have four upcoming picks – all acquired in trades over the last two months – contingent on various factors.
2027 first-round pick from Vegas
The Flames receive Vegas’ first-round pick in 2027 from the Rasmus Andersson trade. However, if that pick is in the top 10 after the draft lottery, the Flames receive Vegas’ 2028 pick instead.
Also, in the unlikely event that Vegas wins the 2026 Stanley Cup (see conditions on 2028 second-round pick) and then crashes and burns the following season to the point that their 2027 first-round pick is top 10 after the draft lottery, then the Flames would receive Vegas’ 2029 first-round pick instead of their 2027 first-round pick.
2027 second-round pick from Colorado
This one’s pretty simple: Colorado sent the Flames a 2027 second-round pick in the Nazem Kadri trade. The Flames will receive the better of the two picks Colorado had at the time, their own or Minnesota’s.
(Minnesota previously sent that pick to Columbus in 2024 as part of the David Jiricek trade, and then Columbus sent that pick to Colorado conditionally as part of the Charlie Coyle trade in 2025, which then became locked in when Columbus traded their second-rounder to Seattle in a different trade later that year.)
2028 first-round pick from Colorado
Okay, this one is more complex.
Colorado traded their 2027 first-round pick to Toronto in the Nicolas Roy trade. But that pick is top 10 protected, meaning if it’s in the top 10 after the draft lottery, Colorado keeps it and Toronto gets their 2028 first-round pick instead. If that happens, the Flames receive Colorado’s 2029 first-round pick (instead of their 2028 first-round pick) as part of the Nazem Kadri trade.
If Colorado’s 2027 pick is outside of the top 10 and transfers to Toronto, their 2028 first-round pick to Calgary is also top 10 protected. So if their 2028 pick is outside of the top 10, the Flames would get it, but if it’s in the top 10, then they receive Colorado’s 2029 first-round pick instead.
Long story short: if Colorado’s 2027 or 2028 first-round picks are in the top 10, the Flames receive their 2029 first-round pick. If neither of them are in the top 10, the Flames receive their 2028 first-round pick.
2028 second-round pick from Vegas
Finally, the Flames are slated to receive Vegas’ second-round pick in 2028 as part of the Rasmus Andersson. However, if Vegas wins the 2026 Stanley Cup, this pick upgrades to Vegas’ 2028 first-round pick.
Conditional picks remain a part of Conroy’s plan as GM, but at least the conditions – so far – aren’t as wildly complex as Treliving’s got.
