It’s been a busy week in the world of the Calgary Flames, but we just wanted to take note of two announcements by their American Hockey League club, the Calgary Wranglers. The Wranglers officially announced the signing of three players, as well as two coaches.

The club announced one-year, two-way deals for forwards Lucas Feuk, Matt Marcinew and Calder Brooks that allow them to play with the AHL’s Wranglers or the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush.

Feuk, 21, was a fourth-round selection of the Flames in 2019. A Swedish product, he’s bounced around Swedish hockey over the past three seasons, playing in the second and third tiers. He’s got a season remaining before the Flames lose his NHL rights, so bringing him to North America on an AHL deal at least gives them a chance to be hands-on with him before deciding to sign him (or not).

Marcinew, 28, is a Calgary kid returning home after time away playing all over the place. Since his time with Calgary Buffaloes in 2010-11, he’s played in Lloydminster (AJHL), Olds (AJHL), Denver (NCAA), Ontario (AHL), Manchester (ECHL), Springfield (AHL), Stockton (AHL), Greenville (ECHL), Indianapolis (ECHL), Hameenlinna, Finland (Liiga) and Sodertalje, Sweden (HockeyAllsvenskan). He projects as experienced forward depth for a young team.

Brooks, 28, is a Saskatchewan kid returning to Calgary after some time away. He spent two and a half seasons with the Calgary Hitmen between 2011 and 2014. After aging out of the WHL in 2015, he spent four seasons in USports with St. Mary’s University, then spent time in Germany, France, the ECHL and the AHL. He’s likely another depth forward piece for the Wranglers.

The Wranglers also announced the hiring of MacKenzie Skapski as goaltending coach and Daniel Johnston as video coach/team services. Skapski replaces Thomas Speer, who was hired by the San Jose Sharks, while Johnston replaces Kohl Schultz. Both Skapski and Johnston are former WHL players who played a little bit of pro – Skapski played in two games for the New York Rangers – before transitioning to coaching recently.
