Calgary Flames centre @Mikael Backlund scored his first career shootout goal to clinch his team’s 2–1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday evening.
Backlund was the Flames’ seventh shooter in the skills competition. He entered Monday’s game 0-for-7 in shootout attempts in his 14-season NHL career, although he did score on a penalty shot during regulation time in a 4–1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 19, 2019.
With the shootout — and the game — tied at one goal apiece, Backlund entered the Penguins’ zone with moderate speed on the right side before cutting across to the left and firing a shot over Jarry’s glove to put the Flames on top.
@Jacob Markstrom subsequently stopped @Brock McGinn to seal the Flames’ 2–1 win over the Penguins. Here’s the video of Backlund’s shootout winner, as posted to Twitter by the verified Calgary Flames account:
With the win, the Flames improved to 13–4–5 on the season. @Milan Lucic scored the team’s only goal in regulation; before Backlund’s winner, @Johnny Gaudreau also tallied in the shootout.
Markstrom made 21 saves in regulation for his ninth win of the 2021–22 campaign. The Flames will return to action in Los Angeles on Dec. 2 for a date against the Kings.
