Calgary Flames forward Jakob Pelletier scored his first National Hockey League goal to spark a comeback for his team in the second period of Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

With the Flames down 2–0, Pelletier outraced Sabres forward Victor Olofsson in transition to create a partial 2-on-1 rush. Racing down the right side, Nazem Kadri feathered a perfect saucer pass over to Pelletier, who fired a wrister under Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s blocker to put the Flames on the board.

Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau picked up the assists on Pelletier’s first NHL goal, which came at the 2:17 mark of the second period. The Flames subsequently tacked on three more goals in the next 5:22 to take a 4–2 lead over the Sabres.

The Flames originally selected Pelletier in the first round (No. 26 overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft. The 5’10”, 180-pound winger has 16 goals and 36 points in 33 AHL games with the Calgary Wranglers this season.

Entering Saturday’s game against the Sabres, Pelletier had appeared in six NHL games with the Flames without recording a point. After scoring his first NHL goal, he also provided the screen in front of Luukkonen as Nazem Kadri gave the Flames a 4–2 lead midway through the period with his 20th goal of the season.

Mikael Backlund and Dennis Gilbert have also scored for Calgary, which currently controls the shots on goal by a count of 32–7 late in the second period. Tage Thompson and Casey Mittelstadt have the goals for Buffalo.

The Flames are looking for their first win since the All-Star break after dropping back-to-back decisions against the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings on Monday and Thursday. They currently rank fifth in the Pacific Division with a 24–18–10 record and 58 points through 52 games.
