We should probably be talking more about Flames prospect Ethan Wyttenbach

Friends, it’s normal to have a bit of healthy skepticism about a newly drafted prospect.
When a player is drafted, there’s a lot of hope, and it’s natural to be skeptical about all the great things you hear about a player. Everybody is a blank slate onto which an organization’s – and a fanbase’s – hopes and dreams can be projected. The season starts and there’s promising early returns, but you have to be skeptical about sample size. Or about the quality of competition. Or about a player’s consistency.
In short, there’s a zillion little reasons to see a player putting up numbers early in a season and find ways to dismiss or minimize the accomplishment.
With that in mind, gang, we should talk about 2025 Flames fifth-round pick Ethan Wyttenbach. Selected from the United States Hockey League’s Sioux Falls Stampede. He posted really solid numbers as a USHL rookie in 2024-25 – 24 goals and 51 points in 44 games – but between his modest frame (5’10” and 180 pounds) and small sample size in higher-end hockey, him falling to the fifth round made some sense. There were enough things to like about his game that he seemed likely to be drafted, but enough flaws that scouts could fixate on that the Flames got him at 144th overall. (He was the first-ever winner of the USHL’s Gaudreau Award, given to the player that embodied the spirit of the late Gaudreau brothers.)
15 games into his freshman season, that roll of the dice seems really, really smart. Following Wednesday’s overtime win over Holy Cross, Wyttenbach leads all NCAA freshmen in points with 20 – and that puts him in the top 10 of all college scorers. Yeah, he’s still not a huge kid. Yeah, it’s only 15 games. Yeah, he’s playing in one of college’s “easier” conferences.
But a year after adapting very quickly to a strong USHL circuit, Wyttenbach is doing it again in the NCAA. He’s definitely a prospect worth remembering going forward.
