It’s a brand new season.
With the season just over a week old, it’s worth taking a look at how the rest of the Pacific Division is doing. It hasn’t taken long, but it’s easy to tell which teams will be contending for a playoff spot and which teams will be competing for the services of Gavin McKenna.
Let’s take a look at the week that was.

Anaheim Ducks

It looks as if the Anaheim Ducks have finally taken a step forward. This past week, they fell 3-1 to the Seattle Kraken, but defeated the San Jose Sharks 7-6 in overtime, before defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3. Chris Kreider’s four goals and five points lead the team.
The Ducks have had a relatively easy schedule thus far and will continue to do so for the remainder of the month. Of the 10 teams the Ducks play in October, only three made the postseason in 2024-25. Next up for the Ducks is a home game against the Carolina Hurricanes, followed by games against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators on the road.

Calgary Flames

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Calgary Flames. After overcoming a 3-0 deficit to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout, they lost their next three games. A 5-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, a 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, and a 4-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Flames sit toward the bottom of the league standings, which is good for the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes. But if they wish to contend for a playoff spot, they have to get going soon. They’ll head to Salt Lake City to play the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday, followed by another road game against the Vegas Golden Knights. On Monday, they return home to host the Winnipeg Jets.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have had a strong start to their season. Their lone blip was blowing a 3-0 lead to the Flames, but they followed it up with a 3-1 victory against the Vancouver Canucks and a 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers.
On Tuesday, they began a five-game road trip with a win over the Rangers, and it continues with games against the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators. They are currently second in the Pacific Division.

Los Angeles Kings

After falling to the Edmonton Oilers in the 2025 postseason, the fourth consecutive year they suffered that fate, the Los Angeles Kings haven’t had a great start to the new season. They fell 4-1 to the Colorado Avalanche in the home opener, before defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 6-5 in overtime. They’re currently on a two-game losing streak, falling 3-2 to the Winnipeg Jets and losing 4-3 in a shootout to the Minnesota Wild.
This week, the Kings return home for the first time since the season opener to host the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes, before beginning a five-game road trip, with the first stop being in St. Louis against the Blues.

San Jose Sharks

Once again, the San Jose Sharks aren’t good, but they sure are entertaining. Up a goal in the final two minutes against the Vegas Golden Knights, a shot from centre ice beat Alex Nedeljkovic to tie it up, before the netminder turned the puck over at the blue line in overtime. In their second game, the Sharks played a barn burner against the Ducks, falling 7-6 in overtime. Their most recent game was a 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
On Friday, they’ll head to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Mammoth, before returning home on Saturday to host the Pittsburgh Penguins. They’ll head on their New York City metropolitan road trip, beginning with a game against the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Seattle Kraken

The most surprising team to begin the season is the Seattle Kraken. They began their season with a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks, followed by a 2-1 overtime victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. Their winning streak to begin the season ended at the hands of the Montréal Canadiens, as the Kraken fell 5-4 in overtime.
Their Eastern Conference road trip continues, facing the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, and the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

Vancouver Canucks

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Vancouver Canucks. After their season-opening win against the Calgary Flames, a 5-1 win, they followed it up with a 3-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers and a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
In terms of the schedule difficulty next week, it’s a mixed bag. They hit the road and begin with a game against the Dallas Stars, followed by a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. After that back-to-back, the Canucks head out east to face the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Vegas Golden Knights

Leading the Pacific Division is the Vegas Golden Knights, as they’ve played a handful of games that went to overtime. First was a 6-5 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings, followed by a 4-3 overtime victory over the San Jose Sharks. On Saturday, they fell 2-1 in overtime to the Seattle Kraken before defeating the Calgary Flames 4-2.
This week, the Golden Knights begin a home stand, hosting the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and the Carolina Hurricanes. It is worth noting that the Golden Knights will be without netminder Adin Hill, as he left Tuesday’s game against the Flames.
