American Thanksgiving is a notable day on the hockey schedule.
Teams that are in a playoff spot come American Thanksgiving make the post-season over 77% of the time. In the Pacific Division, the Anaheim Ducks sit first, followed closely by the Vegas Golden Knights, Seattle Kraken, and Los Angeles Kings. On the outside looking in are the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Calgary Flames.
This is What’s Going On In the Pacific Division, the weekly article where we look at how teams from the division fared, as well as setting up the following week. Let’s take a look at the week that was.

Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks were at home for the entirety of last week. After defeating the Utah Mammoth and Boston Bruins heading into the week, they fell 3-2 to the Ottawa Senators, defeated the Vegas Golden Knights, before falling 5-4 to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday.
This coming week will be a busy one for the Ducks. Like all the other 31 teams, it’s an off-day on Thursday, but they’ll return to action on Friday to host the Los Angeles Kings in the final game of their home stand. They then head on the road to face the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis on back-to-back days, before hosting the Mammoth again.

Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are starting to get some traction this season. Coming into the week, they had defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-2, and it became a three-game win streak with a 3-2 shootout win over the Dallas Stars and a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Unfortunately, the Tampa Bay Lightning put an end to that with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday.
This week, the Flames are on the road, playing the Florida Panthers on Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, and the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers had a seven-game Eastern Conference road trip and finished 3-3-1, which is solid all things considered. In the final three games, they started to look like their old selves, falling 2-1 in overtime against the Tampa Bay Lightning on the second game of a back-to-back, before defeating the Florida Panthers 6-3 on Saturday. All of that was undone on Tuesday, as they were smashed 8-3 by the Dallas Stars in their return to Alberta.
They play another road game on Saturday against the Seattle Kraken, before returning home for a five-game home stand. The only game we’ll cover next week is Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Wild.

Los Angeles Kings

Last week, the Los Angeles Kings picked up four of a possible six points. They fell 4-3 in a shootout to the San Jose Sharks, then lost 2-1 in overtime to the Boston Bruins. On Monday, the Kings got their second win against the Ottawa Senators in less than two weeks, defeating them 2-1 in what was another low-scoring game.
This week, the Kings play a back-to-back over the weekend, heading to Anaheim to face to Ducks on Friday, then hosting the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. That’ll start a four-game home stand, with their next game against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

San Jose Sharks

It was a busy week for the San Jose Sharks, as they continue to play .500 hockey. They defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in a shootout, fell 3-2 to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, and followed with a 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins. They were unable to defeat the Colorado Avalanche, as former Sharks’ netminder Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 26 shots he faced in a 6-0 Avalanche win.
Last season, the Sharks finished with 52 points, and just 47 points the season before that. Through 24 games, the Sharks are 11-10-3 with 25 points, a drastic improvement. This week, they host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday, followed by a road game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday. They then return home to host the Utah Mammoth on Monday and the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Seattle Kraken

At American Thanksgiving, the Seattle Kraken are sitting in a playoff spot. This past week, they picked up five of a possible eight points, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2, with the latter game being in overtime. They then fell 1-0 to the New York Islanders in a shootout, before dropping a 3-2 decision to the Dallas Stars.
There isn’t a lot happening with the Kraken this week, as their lone game comes on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers in Seattle.

Vancouver Canucks

There are a lot of rumours surrounding the Vancouver Canucks and captain Quinn Hughes. That’s because they have a 10-12-2 record for 22 points at American Thanksgiving, the fourth-fewest points in the Western Conference. This past week, they fell 4-2 to the Dallas Stars and 5-2 to the Calgary Flames, before defeating the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on Wednesday.
This week, they’ll play a back-to-back against the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings on Friday and Saturday, before finishing up the road trip with a match-up against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

Vegas Golden Knights

Last week wasn’t a great one for the Vegas Golden Knights, as they defeated the Utah Mammoth 4-1, before losing 4-3 in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks, 5-1 to the Mammoth, and 4-3 in a shootout to the Ottawa Senators.
They sit one point behind the Ducks with as many games played, and play their next three games at home. The Golden Knights play the Montréal Canadiens on Friday, the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, and the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
