Are the San Jose Sharks… good?
Only six points separate the first seven teams in the Pacific Division, with the eighth team being the Calgary Flames. The Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, and Seattle Kraken have all taken a step forward this season, while the Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Los Angeles Kings remain in contention for a playoff spot.
This is What’s Going On In the Pacific Division, the weekly article where we look at how teams from the division fared, as well as setting up the following week. Let’s take a look at the week that was.
Anaheim Ducks
Coming into the week, the Anaheim Ducks were first in the division, but with a tough schedule against the Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets, and Colorado Avalanche. It’s safe to say that they’re the real deal, as they defeated the Stars 7-5, the Golden Knights 4-3 in overtime, and the Jets 4-1 to snap a seven-game win streak.
Their schedule is much simpler this week, as they head to Detroit to face the Red Wings on Thursday, travel to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, before returning home for a six-game home stand, with their first matchup against the Utah Mammoth. They’ll play the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
Calgary Flames
It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Calgary Flames won’t contend for a post-season spot in 2025-26, as they have a 4-12-2 record for 10 points, the fewest in the league. They only scored twice in the three games they played, falling 4-0 to the Chicago Blackhawks, 2-0 to the Wild, and 3-2 to the St. Louis Blues.
This week, they’ll host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and the Jets on Saturday, before heading on the road to take on the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. That’ll be a two-game road trip, as they play a back-to-back against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
Edmonton Oilers
There’s nothing better in sports than when the Edmonton Oilers get embarrassed. That was the case on Saturday, as the Avalanche walloped them 9-1 in the night cap of Hockey Night in Canada. It looked as if they were heading for another loss on Monday, but a last-minute goal and overtime winner from Jack Roslovic won them the game. Then, it looked as if the Philadelphia Flyers stole two points from the Oilers, scoring in the final minute. But the play was deemed offside and Roslovic scored another overtime winner.
The game against the Flyers was the first of seven on the road. They’ll face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, and the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings played three games this past week, falling 5-2 at home to the Florida Panthers. However, they mustered out a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, then a 5-1 win over the Atlantic Division Montréal Canadiens. They currently sit in second place in the Pacific Division with an 8-5-4 record.
They’ll continue their Eastern Conference road trip this week, facing the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, before heading to Canada’s capital on Saturday to play the Ottawa Senators. On Monday, the Kings will head to the United States’ capital to play the Washington Capitals.
San Jose Sharks
Where were you on Mar. 26, 2022? I’m not quite sure where I was, but the San Jose Sharks had a 29-28-8 record, which was the last time they had a record above .500. They then proceeded to go on a 10-game losing streak, one of seven times they’ve had a 9+ game losing streak since the last time they were .500.
The Sharks didn’t have a great start to the season, losing their first six games chaotically, but since Oct. 23, the Sharks have been winning. Since the six-game losing streak, they are 8-2-1 and won the three games they’ve played since the last article: a 2-1 victory over the Jets, a 3-1 victory over the Panthers, and a 2-1 overtime victory over the Wild.
For the first time since the start of the 2021-22 season, the Sharks are on a four-game winning streak. This week, they’ll face the Flames and Kraken, before returning home to host the Mammoth on Tuesday.
Seattle Kraken
The Seattle Kraken are one of many Pacific Division teams stuck in the middle, as they have 19 points thanks to a 7-4-5 record. Like last week, they had a 1-1-1 week, winning 4-3 in overtime against the Blues, falling 2-1 to the Stars, and then 2-1 to the Blue Jackets in a shootout.
This coming week, the Kraken will host the Jets on Thursday, then the Sharks on Saturday. They’ll then begin a four-game road trip, with their first stop against the Red Wings on Tuesday.
Vancouver Canucks
Like the Kraken, the Vancouver Canucks finished the week with a 1-1-1 record, defeating the Blue Jackets 4-3, losing 5-4 in overtime to the Avalanche, and falling 5-3 to the Jets on Tuesday. They are one of just two teams in the Pacific Division with a losing record, as their 8-9-1 record is good enough for 17 points, only ahead of the Flames.
The Canucks begin a three-game road trip this week, as they face the Hurricanes on Friday, before a back-to-back in Florida against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday and the Panthers on Monday.
Vegas Golden Knights
Although the Vegas Golden Knights currently sit on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs, they have the second-highest winning percentage in the Pacific Division with a 7-4-4 record. None of those wins came this past week, falling 6-3 to the Lightning, 4-3 in overtime to the Ducks, and 3-2 to the Panthers in a rematch of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals.
To make up those games (they’ve only played 15), the Golden Knights will have a busy week, hosting the New York Islanders on Thursday, playing a road back-to-back against the Blues and Wild, before returning home to host the New York Rangers.
