The Canadian teams in the Pacific Division aren’t having a fun time.
Nearly 30 games into the season, the three Canadian teams in the Pacific Division all sit at the bottom. The San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks continue to have good seasons, while the Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken are still in a position to make their way to the post-season.
This is What’s Going On In the Pacific Division, the weekly article where we look at how teams from the division fared, as well as setting up the following week. Let’s take a look at the week that was.

Anaheim Ducks

In their first game after American Thanksgiving, the Anaheim Ducks were able to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 in a shootout. They then fell 5-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks, defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-1, and fell 7-0 to the Utah Mammoth to go 2-1-1 over the week. With a 16-10-1 record, they sit first in the Pacific Division, but with a lower point percentage than the Golden Knights.
Their next two games are at home, hosting the Washington Capitals on Friday and the Blackhawks on Sunday, before hitting the road for an Eastern Conference road trip. The first match-up is against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Calgary Flames

It was a fine week for the Calgary Flames, who sit at the bottom of the National Hockey League standings with 22 points. They defeated the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, by a score of 5-3. On Sunday, they fell 1-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes in an exciting game, but were blown out 5-1 by the Nashville Predators.
The Flames return home this week. They’ll host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, the Utah Mammoth on Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, and finally the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

Edmonton Oilers

After embarrassingly losing 8-3 to the Dallas Stars, the Edmonton Oilers rebounded with a 4-0 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. In their next game, the Oilers also fell 1-0, but were goalie’d by Jesper Wallstedt, a netminder they could’ve chosen in the 2021 draft if they didn’t trade down. Smart management there.
It’ll be a busier week for the Oilers as they are in the midst of a five-game home stand. They’ll host the Kraken on Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, and the Sabres on Tuesday.

Los Angeles Kings

Like the Flames, the Los Angeles Kings had a 1-1-1 week, falling 5-4 in a shootout to the Ducks, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in overtime, and ending the week with a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.
This week, the Kings host the Blackhawks for two games, one on Thursday and the other on Saturday. They’ll then hit the road for two games, heading to Salt Lake City to face the Mammoth, before stopping in the home of Grunge to play the Seattle Kraken.

San Jose Sharks

Entering December, the San Jose Sharks still have a record above .500, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. This past week, they defeated the Canucks 3-2, fell 4-3 to the Vegas Golden Knights, rebounded with a 6-3 win over the Mammoth on Monday, then fell 7-1 to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
This week, they’ll hit the road, first facing the Dallas Stars on Friday, before heading out east to play the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday and the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Seattle Kraken

The Kraken are in a weird spot. They sit just one game out of the final wild card, but have played four fewer games than the Sharks. No other team has played as few games (24) as the Kraken, and only three teams have played 25 games, all Eastern Conference teams. Their lone game this past week was a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Oilers.
It’s technically a home-and-home for the Kraken against the Oilers, as they travel to Northern Alberta to play the reigning Western Conference champions on Thursday. They’ll then host the Red Wings on Saturday, the Wild on Monday, and the Kings on Wednesday.

Vancouver Canucks

As noted earlier in the article, the three Canadian Pacific Division teams are at the bottom of the division. The Oilers still have a chance at making the post-season (they’ve played awful this season), the Canucks do not. This past week, the Canucks dropped all three games they played: a 3-2 loss to the Sharks, a 2-1 overtime loss to the Kings, and a 3-1 loss to the Avalanche.
With rumours around captain Quinn Hughes swirling, the Canucks have a four-game homestand coming up. This week, they’ll host the Mammoth on Friday, the Wild on Saturday, and the Red Wings on Monday.

Vegas Golden Knights

This past week, the Golden Knights went 2-1, defeating the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 (the latter in overtime), but falling 4-1 to the Montréal Canadiens. Although they currently sit second in the Pacific Division, the Golden Knights’ .611 point percentage ranks first in the division.
They’ll head out east this week for a five-game road trip, taking on the New Jersey Devils on Friday, the New York Rangers on Sunday, and the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
