The opening round of the 2026 World Championship is now at the half way mark.
Only three Calgary Flames were in action over the last two days, as Martin Pospíšil and Team Slovakia played Team Slovenia on Tuesday, while Devin Cooley and Matt Coronato represented Team USA in their game against Team Germany on Wednesday.
Let’s take a look at what went on in these last two days.

Tuesday

There was only one Calgary Flames player in action on Tuesday, as Martin Pospíšil’s Team Slovakia defeated Team Slovenia 5-4 in a shootout. They remain unbeaten and control their own destiny. Other games this day saw Team Austria defeat Team Latvia, Team Norway beat Team Italy, and Team Hungary beat Team Great Britain.

Team Slovakia vs Team Slovenia

Two players named Martin scored for Team Slovakia on Tuesday, but Pospíšil did not find the scoresheet. Just 80 seconds into the game, Adam Liška opened the scoring for the Slovaks. With five to play in the opening frame, Ken Ograjenšek tied it for the Slovenians, but Team Slovakia’s Martin Chromiak found twine just over three minutes later to give the Slovaks a 2-1 lead after 20.
Early in the first, Rok Tičar tied the game for the Slovenians, but Filip Mešár and Martin Faško-Rudáš each scored for the Slovaks, giving them a 4-2 lead. With about two to play in the second, Jan Drozg gave the Slovenians some life.
Team Slovakia was able to hold onto their one-goal lead for the first 19 and a half minutes of the third period, but Tičar scored his second of the game with just 31 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
The extra period solved nothing, leading to a five-round shootout. In the end, Team Slovakia scored three, while Team Slovenia scored just one.
It was a quiet game for Pospíšil, being held off the scoresheet as he continued to hunt for his first goal of the tournament. He played about 18 minutes of ice time, winning 15 of the 20 draws he took and firing two shots on net.

Wednesday

There were just two Flame players in action on Wednesday, as Team USA defeated Team Germany 4-3 in a shootout. On top of that, Team Switzerland beat Team Austria 9-0, Team Czechia defeated Team Italy 3-1, and Team Sweden defeated Team Slovenia 6-0.

Team USA vs Team Germany

It wasn’t pretty, but Team USA picked up their second win of the tournament, defeating Team Germany 4-3 in a shootout. Mortiz Seider opened the scoring for the Germans just a minute into the game, but Edmonton Oilers’ youngster Ike Howard tied the game with under six to play in the first.
The Americans took their first lead of the game five minutes into the second period, but Team Germany responded with two goals in a span of less than three minutes to take a 3-2 lead into the third. They, Tommy Novak managed to score the game-tying goal with just over five to play, sending the game to overtime.
Like in Team Slovakia’s game, overtime solved nothing, with the teams needing a skills competition to decide the victor. The Germans scored first in the five-round shootout, but Matt Coronato tied it on the American’s fourth shot. Ryan Leonard ended it.
It wasn’t Coronato’s best game, as he was held off the scoresheet and was a -1 over 18 and a half minutes. He took 20 faceoffs, winning 11 of them (55%), while also managing four shots on net. Cooley wasn’t perfect between the pipes, but he stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced for a .906 save percentage. Both of the American’s wins have come with Cooley in net.

Other notes…

Three Flame players will be in action on Thursday. Zach Whitecloud’s Team Canada returns to action after two days off, taking on Team Norway at 8:20 a.m. MT. At the same time, Oli Määttä and Team Finalnd take on Team Latvia in Group A action. In the later game, Pospíšil’s Team Slovakia plays Team Denmark with a 12:20 p.m. MT start time. The other game on the docket sees the hosts, Team Switzerland, play Team Great Britain.
As for Team USA, they won’t be back in action until 4:20 a.m. MT on Saturday.
