Calgary to co-host 2028 World Cup of Hockey, along with Edmonton and Prague

In February 2028, Calgary’s new arena, Scotia Place, will serve as one of the three host arenas for the 2028 return of the World Cup of Hockey. The National Hockey League and NHLPA jointly announced on Monday morning that Calgary will co-host the event, joined by Edmonton’s Rogers Place and Prague’s O2 Arena.
Per the release, here’s how things will be split up:
- Calgary will host seven games – six group stage games and one elimination game
- Prague will host seven games – six group stage games and one elimination game
- Edmonton will host three games – two semi-final games and the championship final game
Based on all the information we can suss out, eight countries will participate in the World Cup of Hockey, split into two groups of four. Based on the number of games in each site, it appears that the plan is for every team to play a single game round robin within their group, with the top team in each group getting a bye to the semi-final and the second and third-place teams facing off in the “elimination game” to determine the other semi-final participant from each group. Then everyone moves onto Edmonton for the final three games.
Participating nations for the World Cup of Hockey’s 2028 return have yet to be announced, but it’s a safe bet to assume it’ll be the four 4 Nations Face-Off nations (Canada, the United States, Sweden and Finland) and then four more national teams.
Scotia Place is slated to open prior to the 2027-28 NHL season and will be the new home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, WHL’s Calgary Hitmen and NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks. Its construction as replacement for the Scotiabank Saddledome is decades in the making, and we’re not going to bore you with the extensive details. (We’ve written too much about it over the past decade already.)
Edmonton’s Rogers Place opened in time for the 2016-17 NHL season and replaced the Edmonton Oilers’ prior home, the Northlands Coliseum. Prague’s O2 Arena opened in 2004 and is the home arena for the Czech Extraliga’s HC Sparta Praha.
We’ll have more details on the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, especially in terms of format, schedule and ticketing information, in the coming weeks and months.
