Notes and expectations
The paper transaction between the Flames and Wranglers that sent down Jakob Pelletier, Walker Duehr and Devin Cooley last week has since been reversed for the forwards. This was a move to buy some time on Pelletier and Duehr’s waiver status. Cooley was up with the Flames on an emergency recall due to a day-to-day injury to Dan Vladar but Vladar has since returned to the Flames lineup. Cooley is back with the Wranglers and should start this game against Ontario. They’ll need some backup in the net too as the AHL affiliate has dropped their last two games.
That’s not to say Waltteri Ignatjew and Connor Murphy did not have good showings over the weekend. Murphy stopped 25 out of 28 shots in his game and Ignatjew stopped 17 of 20 in his start. They played a solid game each and Coachella Valley showed they’re not losing the Wranglers’ numbers anytime soon. Calgary couldn’t get much of anything past their opposing netminders and their typical run of scoring did not show itself in their last series. No matter the season or standings, they always seem to have a tough time against the Firebirds.
What did show itself was the continued success of Martin Frk, Sam Honzek and Rory Kerins. With just three goals over the two days, each contributed to the scoresheet. Kerins still sits at the top of the league scoring and had a goal in their last meeting with Coachella Valley. Frk also scored in Calgary’s last game against the Firebirds. Sam Honzek has six points in his last five games with an assist last game.
The Wranglers just have one meeting with the Los Angeles Kings affiliates this week before they return home this weekend to host the Henderson Silver Knights. This midweek game gets going at 8:00 p.m. MT and will be streamed on Flo Hockey. Multiple FlamesNation contributors will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
