The Calgary Wranglers had a Halloween night game against the San Diego Gulls to wrap up their week of hockey. They won their eighth straight game on Tuesday night in a close decision but made it a lot more decisive in this one. They pulled ahead early and kept expanding the gap between their opponents to earn a 6-2 win over the Ducks’ affiliate.
Lineup notes
There were a few changes for the Wranglers going into this game. Adam Klapka was sent down on Wednesday and Sam Honzek was reactivated from the IR. Then on Thursday, Matt Coronato was was called up to the Flames and Sam Honzek was assigned to the AHL.
There was no Sam Honzek in this match-up, but Adam Klapka was dressed and slotted into the lineup. Changes from Tuesday’s game included Jarred Tinordi and David Silye slotting back into the lineup. Ilya Nikolaev and Lucas Ciona came out. Calgary went back to 11 forwards and seven defensemen which worked for them last post-season and in early October.
Game at a glance
The Wranglers got their mini-reunion with Oscar Dansk as he got the start for the Gulls. Dansk spent the last two seasons in Calgary before the Flames made goaltending moves over the summer. It proved to work in the Wranglers’ favour as a few of the guys that haven’t been scoring as much as expected this season found their way on the scoresheet. On Calgary’s end, they also opted to start their other goaltender, Waltteri Ignatjew for his third game of the season.
The players and the coaches were saying after their last game that they needed to have a better start. They couldn’t keep relying on working from behind and trying to make a full comeback. They were successful in making that adjustment when William Stromgren scored in the opening two minutes of the game.
Stromgren was due for some production after lighting up the last month of play last season and making some large contributions during the post-season. This season, it took him five games to get on the board and his first goal didn’t come until this game. There were a few players crashing the net and Stromgren got the last touch on a rebound that slipped past Dansk. This goal came at 2:08 and was assisted by Sam Morton and Jeremie Poirier.
Stromgren struck again just under three minutes later when Calgary went on their first power play of the evening. At 5:06, Stromgren was perfectly positioned for a wrist shot that was screened by Adam Klapka. He received Sam Morton’s pass and put his second goal of the night past Dansk. Hunter Brzustewicz got the secondary assist on this marker.
Extra candy for this guy!!
After this goal, the Wranglers had a couple more opportunities on the power play, but this score would hold until the end of the period. At the end of 20 minutes, Calgary had a 2-0 lead over San Diego, a night and day improvement from their last run of games. Shots also improved massively, with Calgary outshooting San Diego 18-8 in the first frame.
The second period was quite interrupted by penalty calls and some overflowing emotions we saw brewing on Tuesday. Dryden Hunt played into that in the opening minutes of the frame when he took on Jansen Harkins for some post-whistle activities. They were dealt offsetting minors.
The score would change in this frame when Sam Colangelo scored the first goal for the Gulls. His teammate cut the zone then he ripped a shot past Ignatjew to cut the Wranglers’ lead. This goal came at 6:08.
The Gulls had the opportunity for an equalizer 1:20 later when Dryden Hunt was called for hooking from behind and the visitors were awarded a penalty shot. Carson Meyer was the shooter but Ignatjew turned his shot away.
Later in the period, Clark Bishop continued his scoring streak with his sixth goal of the season at 14:56. This would go on to be the game-winner making it four straight game-winning goals for the Alternate Captain. He had a stunning toe drag move that once again confused his opposing netminder. Walker Duehr and Ilya Solovyov assisted on Calgary’s third goal of the night.
Bishop is always coming in clutch🔥
This second period was a bit more evened up but still finished with Calgary up 3-1 and shots at an even 12-12. In the third period, Dryden Hunt scored at 5:53 for his second goal of the year right from the slot. David Silye and Jarred Tinordi assisted on this marker.
SO GOOD!! 4-1 US!
For a team that has been quiet on the power play scoring this season, they made it a two-for-seven night in this game when Walker Duehr scored goal number five for Calgary at 12:40. It was a tic-tac-toe play that Duehr finished off with feeds from Sam Morton and William Stromgren.
Nice with it😮💨
13 seconds later. Rory Kerins extended the lead further with a top corner snipe. Dryden Hunt got the lone helper on this goal at 12:53.
Right where mom hides the cookies!! (Or halloween candy)
The Wranglers were able to coast with their lead from here being up 6-1. The Gulls did get one back after a one-sided push after the last Calgary goal. At 17:34, Carson Meyer scored goal number two for San Diego but it wasn’t enough to ignite a comeback.
With four goals between taking this game out of regulation, the Gulls did not pull Dansk and let time run out on this one. The final score was 6-2 for the home team and brought Calgary up to their ninth win in a row. Shots finished 42-29 favouring the Wranglers.
There were a lot of contributions across the lineup in this one and all three stars went to Wranglers skaters. William Stromgren received the first star, Dryden Hunt received the second and Sam Morton received the third.
