The Flames made their second pick of the 2018 draft this morning, selecting left-shot forward Demetrios Koumontzis, who has committed to Arizona State for next season.
Koumontzis, listed at 5’10, 183lbs, played at Edina High School last season in Minnesota last year, scoring 41 points in 24 games. It does seem as though the Flames may have taken Koumontzis above his ranking, as ISS had him ranked 175th, 275th by Future Considerations, 198th by Hockeyprospect.com, and 136th among North American skaters.
Here’s what Chris Peters and Ryan Kennedy had to say about Koumontzis:
Calgary took Edina's Demetrios Koumontzis at 108. Long-range prospect committed to Arizona State, but I had one scout who raved about him as a competitor and thought he had most offensive upside among Minnesota high schoolers this year despite others getting more attention.

I like Demetrios Koumontzis for Calgary – Arizona State commit is small but sturdy and can really put up points. Played for Minnesota high school powerhouse Edina this year

Also, if you can forgive the bad quality, here is a brief highlight reel from his work at Edina High School:

Sounds ok
My sources had Demitrios Koumontzis as a 5th rounder.
Smallish player with great lower body strength. Sounds like he’s already pretty strong and will only add to that. Could be a great pick in years to come
Who is your source… You must reveal to us your source
I desire the source, give it to me
I have a feeling this draft will go down as a Flames Komotose year…
This is not the source. Who is Komotose and what does he know of the source. You must tell me
Pleeeeeeeease the source. I need it the source too. Who is your source?
US high schoolers rarely pan compared to players taken in late rounds from other leagues. Not a huge deal, but they could have made a better bet.
Meh, that highlight video didn’t do much for me, just finished prime chances with no coverage left out alone in front. Wonder if there is any chance he goes to Everett in WHL.
