As expected, the Calgary Flames have made a major roster reduction as they continue to prepare for the regular season. Per a release from the club, 17 players have been eliminated from their main camp.
Update: The Flames have announced a further four players trimmed from their camp roster.
The cuts
Assigned to the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat are goaltender Tyler Parsons, defensemen Oliver Kylington and Adam Ollas Mattsson, and forwards Spencer Foo, Glenn Gawdin, Ryan Lomberg, Matthew Phillips and Brett Pollock. Pending the waiver process, Tyler Graovac, Morgan Klimchuk, Alan Quine, Buddy Robinson and Kerby Rychel will also be heading to Stockton.
Released outright are four players in camp on professional tryout agreements: Gilbert Brule, Jeff Glass, Ryan Sproul and Viktor Svedberg.
Four more players were released from PTOs but invited to Stockton’s camp: defensemen Philip Samuelsson, Justin Falk and Duncan Siemens, and forward Logan Shaw.
The biggest surprise is arguably Kylington, who played a lot in the preseason and looked strong with the puck at times. However, the remainder of the moves seem pretty straight forward. Foo, Robinson and Quine looked very good in games, but have been outshined by Dillon Dube and Andrew Mangiapane throughout training camp.
With only two preseason tune-ups remaining, there simply wasn’t enough time left in camp to give additional looks to players while getting the NHL lineup fine-tuned.
Who’s left?
The Flames have 29 players remaining in camp, meaning there are 6 decisions to make prior to 3 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Oct. 2 – the league’s roster deadline.
