North Dakota Fighting Hawks defenceman and Calgary Flames prospect Abram Wiebe has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s defenceman of the month.
Wiebe, 22, recorded 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in eight games with the Fighting Hawks to lead all NCHC skaters in scoring in February. The 6’3″ left-shot defender played huge minutes alongside a variety of different partners, including Keaton Verhoeff and EJ Emery, to help North Dakota get through the entire month without a single regulation loss.
The Flames acquired Wiebe from the Vegas Golden Knights in January as part of the Rasmus Andersson trade, in which Calgary also received Zach Whitecloud, a 2027 first-round pick, and a conditional 2028 second-round pick. The Golden Knights originally selected Wiebe in the seventh round (No. 209 overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft.
On top of his new recognition as NCHC defenceman of the month, Wiebe is also coming off three consecutive nods as the conference’s defenceman of the week, becoming only the second player in league history to achieve that feat. The Mission, B.C. product finished the month with four multi-point games, a plus-six rating, and 10 blocked shots.
Wiebe is one of three Flames prospects currently playing at UND, along with 2025 first-round pick Cole Reschny and 2022 seventh-round pick Cade Littler. He debuted with the Fighting Hawks in the 2023-24 season and is now in his junior year.
The Flames will retain Wiebe’s exclusive signing rights until Aug. 15 of the year he chooses to leave school. In all likelihood, we could see the Flames elect to sign Wiebe upon the conclusion of his junior year at UND. Wiebe leads all NoDak defencemen with 21 assists and 26 points in 34 games this year.
Before making the jump to the NCAA, Wiebe played parts of four seasons with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs between 2020 and 2023. The Golden Knights picked Wiebe out of Chilliwack in his second year of NHL draft eligibility, and he returned to the Chiefs the following year to serve as team captain before leaving for North Dakota.
Over his three seasons at NoDak, Wiebe has collected 10 goals and 60 points in 112 games. With the 2025-26 regular season now complete, Wiebe and the No. 1-seeded Fighting Hawks will kick off the NCHC Frozen Faceoff with a game against the University of Nebraska-Omaha this Friday.
