Demetrios Koumontzis, Sun Devils win China’s Renaissance Cup

In one of the earliest tournaments in awhile, Calgary Flames prospect Demetrios Koumontzis and his Arizona State University Sun Devils captured the Renaissance Cup (or Fu Xing Cup) in Beijing, China. They beat Kunlun Red Star to win the tournament.

Arizona State was the lone North American entry in the tournament, which also involved KRS-ORG, Tsen Tou Jilin and Ermak Angarsk of the Russian minor league VHL.

Koumontzis played in half the tournament, joining the Sun Devils after being cut from USA Hockey’s Summer Showcase event.

Koumontzis got cut from USA how sad is that I look at our cupboards and i’m not to happy you look at the top 50 Canadian teams prospects and we have 2 Dube number 49 and vali # 36 then you look at the rest of the Canadian teams prospects ouch. If we don’t win now we will be looking at another 12 yrs of mediocrity. Just so disappointing

Koumontzis is a very interesting prospect. He finish T6th in True Freshman Scoring in the entire NCAA and he was only three points out of finishing third.

There are plenty of great NHLers who were cut from World Jr. Teams (Mark Giordano, Joe Pavelski, Brett Hull, Nate Schmidt, Mike Green, etc). It really isn’t an indicator at all of NHL success. It’s more politics than anything to make a World Jr. Team. Koumontzis outscored players like Oliver Wahlstrom last year, but because Waglstrom’s been on the USAs radar longer (and was a first rounder because Jack Hughes made him look way better than he is) he gets the benefit of the doubt.

Not to mention for a fourth rounder to even be invited to these camps is a really positive sign.

Continuing on. The USA literally just cut Kyle Connor a few years ago and he should have won the Hobey Baker that year. So let’s not use Team USAs weird rational for picking teams as a judgment of our drafting.

Other players to be cut or never invited to World Jr Camps who played NCAA include: Dustin Byfuglien, Jake Guentzel, Kevin Labanc, Colton Parayko, Zach Hyman, Tyler Bozak, Danton Heinen, David Backes, Derek Ryan, Brett Pesce, Danny Dekeyser, Frank Vatrano, Alex Iafallo, Craig Smith, etc. There also a ton of elite NHLers who were the 12-13 forwards on World Junior Teams and barley played like Max Pacioretty, etc.

The craziest thing about your logic is this doesn’t even mean he can’t make the team his winter. If he goes and lights up the NCAA this year, he’ll get called back for the winter camp and will get another chance to make the team. Honestly 4-5 players every year make the team who weren’t invited or were cut from the summer camps.

Funny a bunch of trashes but no comments telling why ppl think im crazy Im all eyes tell me how our teams will be a contender in another few yrs after we lose our top 6 players when gio and JH and mony and backs are all gone what do we have unless one or 2 of our 4-6 round picks become a jh where are we ?

My point wasn’t just Koum it is the whole farm system of the Flames I just read a write up about the Farm system rankings in the Athletics and we are ranked 31 in what 32 teams that was my main point. So you can do all the trashing you want but no one here has said anything to counter what I have said just alot of boos but I agrre it sucks but none the less we are in deep trouble in a few yrs down the road just like sutter BT has given away our future for the now and that is why I say if we don’t do it now we will be in a sink hole for another 7 yrs unless all of a sudden we have some pick luck. Being we have a good team now we will not see a bottom or top 6 over all pick for a few yrs to come. It is how ever nice to see use doing good but how good I guess this season should give us a good rating of the next few yrs.
