#Flames have added Ray Edwards as an assistant coach, effective immediately. He’s been with the team in a player development role since 2015-16. Edwards will be on the ice at practice today.

Ray Edwards named new Flames assistant coach

The Calgary Flames have added to their coaching staff. The club announced they have named Ray Edwards, formerly their director of player development, as their newest assistant coach.
Edwards’ previous role had him working with the team’s emerging prospects and helping them build up their games. He’s been with the Flames organization since 2016-17.
Edwards has a crap-ton of coaching experience. He’s been behind the bench almost continuously since 1995:
- Assistant coach with the ECHL’s Huntington Blizzard (1995-98), then head coach (1999-000)
- Head coach with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones (2001-02)
- Head coach with the CHL’s San Angelo Saints (2003-05)
- Head coach with the CHL’s New Mexico Scorpions (2005-06)
- Assistant coach with the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage (2007-08), then head coach (2008-11)
- Head coach with the AHL’s Portland Pirates (2011-15)
Moreover, Edwards seems to be a guy that general manager Brad Treliving knows and trusts. He worked under Treliving from 2007-14 in the Coyotes organization prior to Treliving’s departure to Calgary. He’s one of four former Coyotes staffers in Flames hockey ops, along with Don Maloney, Derek MacKinnon, and European scout Robert Neuhauser.
Edwards joined the club on the ice at Friday’s practice and will be behind the bench moving forward.
