We’re one week away from the 2026 edition of the National Hockey League’s trade deadline, and the Calgary Flames are in an interesting place.
The main piece of business the Flames had to conduct, determining the future of pending unrestricted free agent Rasmus Andersson, has been dealt with, as Andersson is now with the Vegas Golden Knights after a trade back in January.
But the Flames do have some exciting players that could provide value to a contending team. Among them? The likes of Blake Coleman, Nazem Kadri, Zach Whitecloud, Ryan Lomberg, Joel Hanley, Brayden Pachal and MacKenzie Weegar.
But a big topic of conversation between Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast was that several teams have recently joined the Flames in being a “seller,” and that means that there’s some competition for some pieces the Flames might have thought about moving.
Here’s Friedman’s main comments on the Flames:
The number one thing I heard, ‘cause there were a lot of questions about Whitecloud. What were they going to do with Whitecloud? Another team told me that they heard that Whitecloud is not in a hurry to get out of there. He’s not someone who shows up and says ‘no, this isn’t for me, and can I go somewhere else.’ That is not the case. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t get traded, but it means that the Flames are happy to have players that are happy there, and they’re not motivated to move him. They get a great offer, look out. There’s not much else you can do. You get a great offer, you jump at it. But I’ve just heard from a couple teams that Whitecloud indicated to the Flames he’s happy to stay, and therefore they’re not rushing him to the front of the list, we’ve got to trade this guy.
The biggest challenge the Flames will have is all their guys have competition. Kadri, I think people love Kadri the player, I’m not sure they’re crazy about the term, and also there’s other centres. There’s Trocheck, who we mentioned. There’s O’Reilly, who we’ll get to. There’s other centres available. So while I do think people like Kadri the player, between the age and the term I think that’s the challenge that the Flames are going to have. Like I said, people like Coleman, people like Weegar, but there are other players around them. And Conroy has shown he’s not afraid to be patient. And if you look at some of the deals he’s made to get younger, when he has had some leverage to wait, he’s done a pretty good job using that.
Since becoming general manager in May 2023, Craig Conroy has been pretty adamant about two things. First, he wants the team to get younger, and he’s made several trades to facilitate that desire. Second, he’s not going to trade players just to trade players. He wants to get decent value for his assets. As Friedman mentioned, and TSN’s Darren Dreger has also mentioned, Conroy has shown patience in his approach over the past three years and it’s generally turned out well.
We’ll see if the patient stance continues, and if it continues to bear fruit.
The 2026 trade deadline is Fri., Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. MT.
