In news so shocking Calgary Flames fans have been emotionally prepared for it for weeks, prospect netminder Dustin Wolf has been invited to the United States selection camp for the upcoming World Junior Championship tournament.

Wolf, 18, is one of three goalies invited to the camp. The others are Spencer Knight (a Florida Panthers prospect) and Isaiah Saville (a Vegas Golden Knights pick). Countries typically take three goalies to the tournament, so the camp is functionally just to formalize the pecking order of the trio.

The Flames’ seventh round selection at the 2019 NHL Draft, Wolf was infamously the fourth-from-last pick. He’s also been incredibly good for the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips. In 22 appearances this season he’s 16-6-0 with a 1.86 goals against average, .943 save percentage and five shutouts. Among “regular” goalies, he leads the WHL in GAA, SV% and shutouts and is in a class by himself in the entire Canadian Hockey League.

The World Juniors begin on Boxing Day in the Czech Republic. Wolf will most likely be the only Flames prospect in attendance.
