The Calgary Flames had an excellent first period and a less excellent (but still pretty solid) last 40 minutes on Saturday night in Edmonton. They lost 3-2 to the Oilers.
Here are some selected quotes from the post-game media addresses.

Noah Hanifin

The Flames scored first, played engaged, physical hockey for much of the game. Unfortunately, they slipped below .500 with the loss. Hanifin spoke about the loss and how the team can build from it.
It’s obviously difficult. I thought we had a really good start. And obviously it was a back and forth game after that. Obviously it’s a rivalry game and it’s always going to be competitive. It stings as a loss, but we competed. I think if we play that way and we compete that way, we’ll have success more often than not. Something to build off.

Elias Lindholm

The second shift of the third period was basically how the Flames probably want to play all the time. They got into the offensive zone, generated chances, battled to regain loose pucks, and basically wore the Oilers down until scoring. Lindholm walked the media through the Flames’ second goal.
Chuck and Dubes played good down there and hold onto the puck and made some plays. First one I passed to Tanny and he shot it. And we won it back and kept playing down there and then Dubes made a great pass to me. I saw Hanny, or knew he was there, and he found the net, so it was nice.

Ryan Huska

The Flames had chances, hits and emotion in the first period, but not quite much in the later two periods. Huska assessed the team’s emotional engagement following the game.
I think it’s where it needs to be, and that’s the challenge moving forward. The effort in the first period was really good, and there was an emotional attachment to the game, which was important for us. That’s something we have to work on maintaining for a full 60 minutes, not just a 20 minute stretch.
